We had one of those soul shaking days as farmers. We woke up to the very sudden loss our beloved friend and matriarch of our little Beef herd, Ellie the cow. Her passing was an enormous shock and felt devastating in a way we had never experienced before. In need of closure and answers we elected to pay for a necropsy through the University of Maine's Cooperative Extension Lab. This was a great decision and an awesome learning experience. I (Andrew) observed the 3 hour procedure and got a play by play from the Veterinarians, who preserved samples from every major organ in formaldehyde.

At first blush this seemed an emotionally risky thing to do, but come to find out it was exactly what I needed to constructively move through the devastating experience. I'd recommend a necropsy to anyone in this situation. Observing the procedure with me and offering additional insight was the tech from the histopathology lab who offered to give me a tour and walk me through the exact procedures and tools which would render further insights into the cause of death.

As of now we know Ellie died of sepsis very suddenly, but the exact source of the infection is still being worked out. The final holistic measure was to bring Ellie home and return her to the soil in a pile of living compost. Now the focus shifts to her 2 month old calf who is a heifer we've named after her mom.
