⏰️ Time for our weekly report!

Please enjoy these fun farm life photos along with a list of some of the things we accomplished this past week.

📸 The hatchery babies got a tractor ride out of the garage & into the barn. 🚜
📸 Made Matt's favorite summer treat - sun tea! 🌞
📸 Took the plunge and finally brought home the infamous giant metal rooster from Tractor Supply. 🤩
📸 Acquired a complete used run-in shed, had it moved across town, and placed in its new home. This shed will become a second coop. 🐔🐔🐔
📸 Stopped to smell (and photograph) the roses.🌹
📸 Yet another Tacoma-full of produce kept out of the dumpster, thanks to our food pantry friends. 🤗
📸 The first Flocksicles of the year! 90+ degrees = frozen treats to keep everyone cool. 🧊
📸 The geese got out. Again. But we don't mind, they keep the grass mowed & eat pests like ticks & grubs. 🪿🪿🪿
📸 Discovered a VERY broody, rogue hen. I added her here, but she definitely deserves her own post, so watch for more on her! 🪺
👨‍🌾 Finally got to do some work in the garden - irrigation fixed, beds prepped & weeded, peppers planted. ✅️

Chicken Chatter 🐔
🔊Sound on to hear how roosters tell their hens that they've found food.

The specific cluck that Brows is making here signals the ladies to come to him to be fed.

Two nearby hens come running, and like a good boy, he shows them where the treat is and lets them eat first. Some roosters will even break small bits apart & place them in front of their hens.

When selecting which young roosters we want for our flock, we always look for this trait. Good boys don't just protect, they show affection & care. 💞

We sometimes get inquiries from teachers about hatching eggs for their classes. When able, we are happy to oblige. 👩‍🏫📚🐣

A couple of months ago, a local kindergarten teacher reached out about eggs. Typically, the class hatches the eggs and the chicks are returned to us after they have served their educational purpose.

The request was 3 dozen eggs to be split by two classrooms, which truthfully, caught us a little off guard. We had already committed to providing the eggs, but weren't sure that we could supply the quantity needed.

I ended up reaching out to a couple fellow local farmher friends for an assist. I did not want to disappoint our teacher! Three of us were able to contribute a dozen eggs each, successfully reaching the desired quota.

Through our collaborative effort, our teacher and her two classrooms were able to hatch a total of 19 happy, healthy, and genetically diverse chicks that will be joining our laying flock this year!

After a week or so of fun & educational activities focusing on the chicks, such as voting on names, our teacher made arrangements to bring them to us.

🎓 Introducing: The Kindergarten Klass of '26!

This group is by far the friendliest brood we have ever had. There are some real cuties in this hatch, and we are looking forward to seeing what interesting colors they add to our egg basket. 🌈

Our very first Ask Anything question comes from Sarah, who asked:

Since you have meat chickens and egg layers, do they ever mix for breeding? Or do the roosters know which gals are theirs?

Great questions!

We only have experience raising Cornish Cross meat chickens, so our answer will pertain to that type specifically. Here goes:

Our meat chickens are bred to grow quickly. Like, hatch-to-oven in 6-8 weeks quickly. They are not designed for longevity. These birds do not reach breeding age, and even if they did, they would be too large to do so naturally.

However, there are breeds of meat chickens that are slower-growing, less bulky, and able to mature & breed. While mixed breeding between flocks isn't something that happens here, it is possible depending on the breed of meat chicken and whether or not they are kept separately from layers.

As for the roosters knowing who's who? It's doubtful. Roosters are pretty indiscriminate. While they can play favorites, when it comes down to it, a hen is a hen. 😳

👀 What's it like homesteading full-time? Our weekly recap is a small window into our tiny 2-acre world. 🏡

Here, we share a little bit of the odd & extra we do day-to-day in addition to the regular stuff, and snapshots from our farm. Some for fun, some notsomuch. 🙃

Read on to see what we've been up to this week:

📸 Prepped an empty brooder and welcomed 19 new babies thanks to a teacher to whom we donated hatching eggs. (More in-depth post & formal intro later this week!) 🐣🐣🐣
📸 Did an emergency clean out of the coop & barn after finding some unwelcome-but-common pests. 😖
📸 Finally freed the Egg Watch babies from their enclosure & integrated them in with the main flock. 🐔
📸 Hung a kickass new Rooster/Jolly Roger pirate flag outside the coop to help deter aerial predators. 🏴‍☠️🦅
📸 Made our weekly trip to the food pantry, keeping hundreds of pounds of food & produce from going to waste, and making for some very happy animals. 🍉🥬🫐
📸 Helped a young goose feel safer while she tries to figure out nesting & motherhood by giving her an old, salvaged dog crate to use as a brooding box. 🪺
📸 Made an impromptu pilgrimage to the local Tractor Supply for a few impulse babies because 19 is a weird number and 25 isn't. 🤪
🪿 Brought Baby G & the TSC goslings outside to meet the big geese & the rest of their flockmates. ❤️

Meet our boys! 🐓 🐓 🐓

Roosters get a bad rap a lot of the time, but not mine. These guys are top-tier gentlemen, and they aren't hard to look at, either. 😍

We're halfway through another week!

Here's what is moving:
🍳 Eggs are SOLD OUT, but we will be restocking Saturday morning 🌞
🍋 Lemon bread is really popular this week. We tried some and we can understand why - sweet, summer-y, and so so good! Don't forget to try Sarah's other tasty treats, too - chocolate chip & decorated sugar cookies, and super fudgy chocolate brownies 🍪
☕️ Kawa Roasters, Inc. coffee beans are selling. Once you try them, you'll never be able to drink mass-produced coffee ever again. Ask me how I know 😉
🐮 Naked Cow tallow balms are gaining traction. Tallow creams are all-the-rage right now. Creams are made with water; balms are concentrated moisture for your entire body. Get the good stuff!💦
🌷We've had to restock our compost twice this week. Aged to perfection & screened, so you won't find any rocks, sticks or stems in our bags!

Visit the homestead & see all that we have to offer!
