On a red planet, the sunset is blue. Everything you know about evening is inverted here.
On Earth, our sky is blue because air molecules scatter short blue wavelengths in every direction. At sunset, sunlight travels through so much atmosphere that the blue is scattered away entirely, leaving red and orange to reach your eyes.
Mars runs the whole thing backwards. Its atmosphere is thin, but it is loaded with fine dust, and those particles happen to be just the right size to scatter red light forward while letting blue pass more directly through. So the daytime sky is a butterscotch haze, and as the Sun sinks, a cold blue glow blooms around it.
Sit with that. Every human who has ever lived watched a red sunset. On Mars, sunset is the only time you would ever see blue in the sky.
The Sun itself looks wrong too. From Mars, it appears about two thirds the size we see it, a pale small disc rather than a blazing one. And the twilight lingers far longer than ours, because high-altitude dust keeps catching the light for hours after the Sun is gone.
There is a quiet detail in this image many miss. Curiosity did not take this for science. Rovers photograph sunsets partly to measure dust in the atmosphere, but the team also takes them because they are worth seeing. A machine, alone on an empty world with nobody to talk to, stopping to photograph the sunset.
And here is the part that lands. Robots have now watched sunsets on Mars for over a decade. Not one human eye has ever seen one directly.
Someone will though. Someone will stand on that ridge, in a suit, and watch a small pale sun drop into a blue glow, and become the first human being in the history of our species to see an evening on another planet.
