At CanneLA, I like to think of cannelés as the Catherine Deneuve of pastries: timeless, elegant, perfectly French, and impossible to imitate.
To kick off my new series celebrating the best of French culture, let’s raise a glass (or a cannelé) to the one and only Catherine Deneuve — the icon of sophistication, rebellion, and restraint, all at once, also one of my favorite actress.
I’ve actually crossed paths with her several times in Paris, wandering through antique markets, though I never quite had the courage to approach her (how very French of me, I know). And yet, I love finding her again in each film, like an old friend whose silences you’ve learned to adore.
She’s also surprisingly hilarious — you can find videos of her reading outrageous quotes overheard at fashion shows, delivered with that deadpan wit that only Catherine could pull off.
