This Monday started out tough, but it marked the beginning of an incredible journey. We had been waiting for Pillar to kid for over six weeks, and just before I left town, her ligaments were completely gone. I had a nagging feeling she would kid while I was away, and Waldo was home alone. Wednesday, she was acting uncomfortable, but he was able to check her and found her cervix had not dilated. As the evening approached, she seemed to settle down, eating hay and meals at feeding time. We even joked that it might be a false pregnancy. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday came and went, with no babies, and I started to think she was waiting for me. Sunday afternoon, I got home, and she was still eating, but acting uncomfortable again. Her cervix was not dilated, but she was not in active labor. I called the vet just before 6 am, and we quickly realized we had to act fast. As we loaded her up to get to the vet for an emergency c-section, we began to lose her. We delivered two babies postmortem, one perfect buckling and one perfect doeling. I pulled the little buckling and handed him off to Waldo to work on, while I pulled the doeling. Despite our best efforts, only the buckling was viable. This little boy has beaten the odds, and his progress has been nothing short of miraculous. The last couple of days, he's had pneumonia, likely brought on by his traumatic delivery, with temperatures soaring to 105 degrees, accompanied by respiratory issues. But we've finally seen a breakthrough, with temperatures staying below 103.5 degrees for about 24 hours. His front knuckles had started to curl under, but we've addressed the issue with Selenium and vitamin E paste, avoiding the need for an injection as we were already given injections foe antibiotics and banimine to control his fever. We've also splinted his front legs, but that hasn't slowed him down one bit. He's jumping, hopping, and living his best life. This little guy's story is a testament to the ups and downs of farm life, and the joy that comes with witnessing the miraculous. Please keep him in your prayers 🙏
