Gust Front Farm

Gust Front Farm A permaculture homestead in northeast Kansas specializing in Ancona ducks, Cream Legbar chickens, and Pilgrim geese. NPIP #48-372

Once upon a time, I decided to get a few chickens. A few chickens turned into a lot of chickens, and then we added ducks and geese. We have a full blown obsession for raising heritage birds the right way on our windy little homestead. We believe in sustainable agriculture and are developing a permaculture food forest to provide fodder for our livestock. We have over a dozen different breeds of ch

Two of the poultry varieties we breed have moved down The Livestock Conservancy Conservation Priority List. This is excellent news as it means that both breeds are no longer considered to be critically endangered! Pilgrim geese moved from "Critical" to "Threatened". Ancona ducks jumped two whole spots from "Critical" to "Watch".

We participated in the survey that The Livestock Conservancy used to create these designations and are happy to play a small part in the preservation of these two precious breeds.

We found our first Pilgrim Goose egg of 2016 yesterday. That means it won't be too long before we'll begin incubating and hatching out adorable, autosexing goslings.

We already have a waiting list for goslings (local pick up only). If you'd like to be added to the list, send us a message!

It may be December but apparently the weather is still good enough for this mushroom log to start production. The log was inoculated with oyster mushroom spawn and hangs out under one of our cherry trees.

It's so slick out there that it would have been nice to have crampons and an ice ax to help me climb back up the hill after chores this morning. The beauty makes up for the difficulty.

I am such an embarrassing mom. Not only do I drive around town looking for bags of leaves on the curb to compost, but I also make my family take home buckets full of guts and seeds from a pumpkin carving activity at church. Sure the chickens love them, but I just don't understand the level of embarrassment my children suffer.

I'll need to do better next year.... I'll bring 20 buckets instead of two and I'll be able to freeze enough pumpkin to feed my flock for a year!

Sorry kids. ;)

I tried to take some photos of my favorite Cream Legbar pullet yesterday. The lighting and the other chickens didn't cooperate with what I needed the photos for*, but they are pretty anyway!

*I'm photographing the individual Cream Legbars that will make up my breeding group for 2016. This is the best group yet! Hatching eggs will be for sale in February.
