๐๐ Barnyard Barbie Chicken Keeping Tip: Dust Baths 101 ๐๐
Ever wonder why your chickens are flopping around in the dirt looking like theyโre having a full-blown spa day? ๐
Theyโre taking a dust bath! โจ
โจ Why chickens need dust baths
Dust baths help chickens:
๐ Control mites and lice naturally
๐ Remove excess oil from their feathers
๐ Keep feathers fluffy and healthy
๐ Stay entertained and reduce boredom
A chicken covered in dirt is usually a happy chicken, not a dirty one! ๐
โจ Easy DIY Dust Bath Mix
You can use:
๐ฟ Plain dry dirt or loose soil
๐ฟ Play sand
๐ฟ A small amount of wood ash from untreated wood
๐ฟ Food-grade diatomaceous earth (optional)
Mix it together in a dry area, old tire, kiddie pool, planter box, or a corner of the run.
โจ Why People Add Diatomaceous Earth
Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is made from the fossilized remains of tiny aquatic organisms called diatoms. The microscopic particles have sharp edges that can damage the outer coating of some insects, causing them to dry out.
Many chicken keepers add a small amount to dust baths to help reduce external pests like mites and lice.
๐ As a bonus, it can also help discourage ants from hanging around dust bath areas and feed stations when kept dry.
โ ๏ธ Use only food-grade DE and avoid creating large dust clouds, since excessive dust can irritate both chickensโ and humansโ lungs.
๐ I use food-grade DE and have it linked in my Amazon Chicken Favorites List if youโre looking for one!
โจ Dust Bath Tips
โ Keep it dry if possible
๐ Chickens love sunny dust bath spots
๐ Expect them to dig giant craters in your favorite flower bed instead of using the one you made for them ๐
If your chickens arenโt dust bathing, check that the area isnโt too wet, muddy, or compacted.
Happy hens = dusty hens! ๐๐
