Guatemala has taken me by surprise.

Today we drove past a valley at least the size of the Redland Agricultural Area where Tiny Farm grows, possibly much larger, with small human scale plots stretching as far as the eye could see.

Lettuce, brassicas, carrots, herbs, and many other vegetables growing in rich volcanic soil, much of it if not all, cultivated by hand.

I’ve visited farms all over, but I’ve never seen anything quite like this concentration of diversified human scale food production.

Definitely making it a point to come back and spend time with these growers. There’s a lot to learn here, especially on the supply chain and distribution areas.

We rented a car today to explore some of the villages around Antigua and, while looking at the map, noticed a place called Emanuel’s Garden.

We eventually made it to the garden through steep and narrow roads. It’s not a tourist attraction by any means, but we did get a chance to see some of the fields and the surrounding farmland.

One thing that has surprised me in Guatemala is just how much lettuce and baby greens are grown naturally in the soil. I wasn’t expecting that. But it makes sense since the weather is basically an eternal spring.

The views of the steep fields with Volcán de Fuego in the background are priceless.

I always make it a point to visit farms when we travel. There’s something about being away from home that opens your mind and makes you more receptive to new ideas.

I love seeing how other farmers approach their work, the systems they build, the challenges they solve, and the little details that make their farms unique.

Each farm is as unique as the farmer behind it, and every one has something to teach us if we take the time to look closely.

I really liked the tunnel system this grower has set up here. It’s something I’ve been considering for Tiny Farm for quite a while.

I’m a little jealous of how nimble and lightweight the infrastructure can be in this area. Back home, we have to contend with months of strong winds, so anything we build has to be designed with that reality in mind.

Still, seeing systems like this makes me want to build some protected growing areas at Tiny Farm.

And just like that, our eighth growing season comes to an end today.

Thank you to all our CSA members for your support and trust. Thank you to the chefs and restaurants who believe in what we do and choose to support local agriculture with your business. Thank you to Legion Park Farmers Market and Urban Oasis for hosting the best farmers market in town. Thank you to all of you who come out to market. Thank you Miami!

This season brought its share of challenges, but it also brought abundance, growth, and countless reminders of why we do this work. None of it would be possible without the community that shows up for us week after week.

Now time for a quick break and a reset but our ninth growing season is already underway and it will be a good one. Have a great summer and see you all very soon!

Another one almost three years in the making. Sherbet Berry is one of the six different tropical berries we’re growing. Extremely pleasant flavor, sweet and tangy in all the good ways. Slightly astringent. What it lacks in yield it makes up for in flavor.

Finally after two fi***ng years, our first figs.

This is one of those crops that feel especially meaningful to me. More than just fruit, it feels like a connection to where my family comes from, a way of honoring tradition through farming.

Figs transport me straight to the Mediterranean. To the small coastal city of Trani, in the Puglia region of Italy, where my maternal last name originates. They also take me to the Mediterranean landscapes of Israel. It amazes me that something as simple as a fig tree can carry that feeling across thousands of miles and generations.

For those curious, the last name is Mitrani, combining the Hebrew preposition “mi” (“from”) with Trani. Literally: “from Trani.”

This one-acre plot up in Ocala is part of our next production expansion as we continue building toward a more abundant and resilient growing season.

More great produce for our chefs, CSA members, and everyone who supports us at Legion Park Farmers Market.

And just like that our first flush of mulberries is over. We should see a second flush once it starts raining later in the summer. All good things must come to an end only to start again at some point in the future.
