The five tomatoes on the right might not look ripe to you with their green shoulders and barely pink areas. They are heirlooms, and many claim they have the best tomato taste. They are picked before they are completely ripe because if they stayed on the vine, they would start to crack and split. FYI, once a tomato starts to go from green to even the tiniest bit of yellow/ pink color, the plant cuts off any further nourishment to the fruit. It does no good to leave it on the vine. It will ripen just as well on your kitchen counter (but don't refrigerate it until it's a beautiful red tomato, just like the two in the left corner....)
Apologies on my photography skills, or lack thereof... but you get the idea. And if you need to see the real thing, there will be PLENTY at the Wayne County Farmers Market tomorrow! I'm sure there will be enough tomatoes to satisfy everyone!
