The origins of Golden Barrel Baking Products have deep roots in the family-owned companies of Zook Molasses Company, Good Food, Inc. and L&S Sweeteners. These companies have a rich history that has included much growth and God’s blessings since their origin.
The Zook Molasses Company was started back in 1934 during the Great Depression by M. Simon Zook filling a need for farmers to feed their livestock with quality molasses.
M. Simon Zook was raised on an Old Order Amish farm in Honey Brook, PA. Sim, deciding early in life that there had to be a better way to earn a living than plowing fields, left the Amish with a sixth-grade education. At the age of 25, he began M. Simon Zook Company with the encouragement and help of his wife Elsie. He started out by traveling from farm to farm grinding feed and baling hay. Ever the entrepreneur, Sim was able to stay ahead of the competition by flying his airplane over his customer’s fields to see who was going to be ready to bale next. He would then arrive on their farm the next day prepared to bale their hay. Before long, he started mixing molasses with the feed to make the feed more palatable to the animals.
Sim, becoming very frustrated at the inconsistency of molasses deliveries, decided to travel to Baltimore himself to pick up the molasses. This began a new aspect of the business with the motto “service with the best quality molasses.” The company, later known as Zook Molasses Company, continues to grow feeding the livestock industry with commercial and organic molasses and other nutritional enhancements.
In 1980, son-in-law, Larry Martin noticed customers frequently coming in to buy animal molasses for their own personnel use as it was a lot cheaper than at the store. And thus began another business venture of selling molasses for human consumption under the Golden Barrel brand name.
Larry then purchased a local product called Good Shoofly Pie Mix. He took the Good from the pie mix and added Food creating Good Food, Inc., a manufacturing and warehousing facility that now does various liquid and dry blending for retail customers and food companies throughout the United States. Good Food, Inc. has expanded several times over the years to meet customer’s growing demands.
1985, Larry and Sally Martin, realizing a demand for larger quantities of liquid sweeteners, opened L&S Sweeteners in Leola, Pennsylvania. L&S Sweeteners is a rail siding business where railcars of sugar, corn syrup, and other products are trans-loaded and shipped by trucks to various customers. L&S can now house 95 railcars of product. L&S is also the home to the Zook Generation Station that turns methane gas into 3.2 megawatts of renewable energy for us and other local businesses and more recently a new sugar refinery for making raw sugar into liquid sugars cutting out the middleman.
As a company, Good Food, Inc. and L&S Sweeteners make products for many large, recognizable food companies throughout the United States.
Through the years, the Golden Barrel brand has expanded to include many different blends of molasses, sugars, and syrups for baking and many other uses. The line has grown to include cooking oils, fondants and dry mixes as well.
Since 1934, the overall business of Zook Molasses Company including Good Food, Inc. and L&S Sweeteners has endured many advancements and challenges including a destructive tornado the day before Thanksgiving in 1999 to our Honey Brook facility. The company has endured thanks to the faithfulness of its employees and especially the grace of God.
The purpose has always been to positively inspire and have an eternal impact for the Glory of God as we build relationships and engage in successful commerce. We value excellence in service by exceeding our customer’s expectations while supplying a quality product and building relationships.
