Our Company’s Story

The origins of Golden Barrel Baking Products have deep roots in the family-owned companies of Zook Molasses Company, Good Food, Inc. and L&S Sweeteners. These companies have a rich history that has included much growth and God’s blessings since their origin.

The Zook Molasses Company was started back in 1934 during the Great Depression by M. Simon Zook filling a need for farmers to feed their livestock with quality molasses.

M. Simon Zook was raised on an Old Order Amish farm in Honey Brook, PA. Sim, deciding early in life that there had to be a better way to earn a living than plowing fields, left the Amish with a sixth-grade education. At the age of 25, he began M. Simon Zook Company with the encouragement and help of his wife Elsie. He started out by traveling from farm to farm grinding feed and baling hay. Ever the entrepreneur, Sim was able to stay ahead of the competition by flying his airplane over his customer’s fields to see who was going to be ready to bale next. He would then arrive on their farm the next day prepared to bale their hay. Before long, he started mixing molasses with the feed to make the feed more palatable to the animals.

Sim, becoming very frustrated at the inconsistency of molasses deliveries, decided to travel to Baltimore himself to pick up the molasses. This began a new aspect of the business with the motto “service with the best quality molasses.” The company, later known as Zook Molasses Company, continues to grow feeding the livestock industry with commercial and organic molasses and other nutritional enhancements.
