WASHINGTON, YOU HAVE A NEW AVA! 🍷

After 10 years of work and a 30-year dream, Columbia Hills AVA is officially something to celebrate.

This began with Bob Lorkowski, owner of Cascade Cliffs, a man with a vision long before there was an official boundary on a map. For nearly 30 years, Bob studied those maps, the landscape, the elevations and the vineyards, knowing that recognizing Columbia Hills as its own AVA wasn’t some far-fetched idea. The land had been telling the story all along.

Then came the not-so-glamorous part of making history: the research.

Elevation studies. Soil types. Weather data and rainfall records. Exact coordinates. Boundary lines. Finding the right geologist. Endless research, networking, conversations with wineries and growers—and a whole lot of persistence.

Enter geologist Kevin Pogue, whose expertise helped facilitate the enormous task of turning decades of observation into the scientific case needed to establish an AVA.

And this absolutely took a village. Growers, wineries, researchers and supporters contributed knowledge and boots-on-the-ground information, including grower Denise Beaks on Stacker Butte, who was an incredible resource throughout the process.

I am incredibly proud to have served as a point person on this project, helping with research, networking and pulling together the many pieces required to move it forward. Watching something that began as Bob’s vision become reality has been pretty extraordinary.

Ten years of work.
Thirty years of dreaming.
Countless maps, soil samples, weather records, coordinates, conversations—and probably more than a few bottles of wine.

Today, Columbia Hills gets its place on the viticultural map.

And congratulations, Washington—you have a NEW AVA: COLUMBIA HILLS!
