Trying something new.

We’ve always felt like hogs should be raised on dirt, woods, and pasture. We’ve had some bumps in the road lately and learned a few lessons that hopefully I can share with you.

Our gilts and sows have always farrowed on dirt, and we’ve had good success with our production over the years. However, our sows are becoming very large by the time they reach 3 years old or so. Some of them are struggling to avoid stepping on piglets during those first couple of days after farrowing.

These sows have raised large litters and have always had good mothering abilities. But as they age, it seems their size makes it harder for them to avoid crushing a few piglets.

I’ve done a good job of keeping them on a proper feed ration, and weighing their daily feed has helped keep these sows at an appropriate weight. That has helped, but as of today, we’ve installed a couple of farrowing crates.

I’m hoping this will cut back on piglet losses with these older sows and allow us to keep some of these proven females around longer.

We have a couple of litters due in the next two weeks, so I’ll let you know how it goes. We’re always learning and trying to find ways to improve while still raising hogs the way we believe they should be raised.
