Down E Farms, Inc Down E Farms - A Tradition in Producing High Quality Beef Of course, no farm is complete wihtout a couple of dogs and good mouse huntin' cat!

A Family Tradition - Down E Farms is a locally owned and operated beef cattle operation that has been in the Downey family since great-grandpa James bought the first 80 acres in 1913. Over the years, the family farm has raised not only beef cattle but also dairy cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens, and even a few horses. Today the farm is home to over 50 head of brood cows and calves. Once known for having the "all white cows on State Road 9," we've recently introduced some crossbred cattle into our purebred Charolais herd. While the "white cows" are still the heart of the farm, introducing these additional breeds can help give us a more competitive edge in the beef industry. Freezer Beef - Here at Down E Farms, we pride ourselves on the tradition of producing high quality meat for not only our family, but for your family as well. All the beef we sell is born and raised right here in Bartholomew County and is processed at Greensburg Locker in Decatur County. We sell retail cuts including ground beef, patties, roasts, and steaks, along with quarters, halves, and wholes which can be custom cut to your specifications. Garden Produce - Not all the activity at Down E Farms is at the barn or in the pasture fields. From early spring to late fall, you can find family members working hard in our fruit and vegetable gardens. Most of our produce gets eaten fresh or is canned for the winter months. We’ve tried many different crops over the years, from celery and eggplant to rhubarb and peaches. Direct Connect (aka cell phone) Numbers:

Sometimes we name our calves…and sometimes they name themselves. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Remember that wobbly-legged heifer Logan helped onto the scales a few days ago? Well, she found her legs and they are strong! We turned her and her mama out into the north pasture this afternoon and like any fresh toddler, she tested all her boundaries. Of course, the concept of hot wire was a new experience for her but instead of keeping her inside the pasture, she bolted across and didn’t stop. Three hot wires later, Nathan and Elijah chased her into an empty pen in the new barn and Sheila tackled her until Nathan arrived with a halter. Together with Elijah, the trio drove her back to the right pasture to reunite her with her mom. Fingers crossed she’s learned her lesson and stays put.

Meet Tumbleweed - because she just blows all over the place. 🙄

It’s baby season around here!

Nathan discovered a new heifer when he walked through cows this morning. Of all the places in the pasture, mama had calved in a slight depression in the ground so her baby had trouble standing up out of the slippery grass. Nathan gave her an assist and left them to do their thing.

Here she is about 30 minutes later - wobbly but full of energy! Once mama rests a bit, she’ll get up and clean off the calf. By tonight, we’re confident this calf will be clean and white and zooming around!

New Baby Alert! 🚨 Come along with us tonight as Logan weighs a newborn heifer calf and gives her some vaccinations.
