When you wait too long to dig potatoes, they try to start growing again!

Like everything else this year, this job wasn’t completed on time. Yes, it’s my own fault. It happens.

Are they edible? Of course! Will they store well? Not at all. I plan on cramming as many potatoes as possible into my freezers so they don’t go to waste. Mashed potatoes, blanched diced potatoes, shredded potatoes, and more.

This also means that I am not going to be selling anymore red or white potatoes. What remains will be for my personal stash. I do have sweet potatoes available!

Go outside today and pick your basil. Look for any decent tomatoes. Depending on your location and your micro climate, you will likely wake to frost tomorrow morning!

We actually had a light patchy frost about 10 days ago. Nothing here was really harmed except for part of my row of basil. In the first picture, all of that black, dead plant material is from chilling. Basil is firmly in the warm weather category. The second picture was taken less than 10 feet away. This is an example of how tree canopies can create micro climates. It’s all about knowing your little piece of land.

To dry, I use loopers to cut the entire plant at the base. I rinse it off and cut off any flowers and dead leaves. You can also cut individual stems and bundle them. I have too much to do that! I hang the entire plant in the basement to dry. This creates a fun obstacle course for a few weeks 😂

You can also make pesto to freeze. You can freeze the leaves blended with a bit of olive oil. Make basil salt. SO many options - but act fast! You can even create a bouquet to keep some of it for fresh use for about a week. Just keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Change water daily and use before it gets sad.

P.S. - Lemon balm and mints are not as tender as basil, but often show damage after frost. I don’t start worrying about herbs such as parsley, rosemary, sage, and thyme until we are going to see low 20’s.

It is time to place your Thanksgiving turkey order!!

I know it seems far away, but in the blink of an eye it will be time to plan your holiday meals. Order your turkey now to avoid last minute scrambling!

Our turkeys are delicious. They are raised on pasture and fed non-GMO food. If you have been out to the farm this past month, they are the birds located across the road from our house. They are fairly quiet right now, but as they grow they get more vocal 😂

Over the past week I have picked all of my black beans. I have 3 bushels of pods to work on as time allows.

Sounds good, right? But….

A solid half of the beans produced went bad before picking. Of those picked, a significant portion are sprouted, moldy, or otherwise not good.

This season started out great for my dry beans, but once pods were filled out we got too much rain, too many times. This caused plants to die early, partially dry beans to sprout, and others to mold.

This is a crop that I really like growing, but some years present serious challenges. Now the fun part - trying to get these beans shelled and sorted all while walking around drying pods everyday 😂

As of now, early next week is looking cold. Cold enough that tender items like sweet potatoes and basil need harvested.

I have started digging a few sweet potato plants every morning, harvesting the plant portion for the rabbits. It may make the job a bit more tedious, but I would rather turn the enormous quantity of vines into rabbit meat than compost. I am sure I will still be panic digging Monday afternoon, but at least I will get as much food value out of them as I can!

Sweet potatoes will now be available by the quart here at the farm. We will not be at market this week so plan on coming out if you need something!

It’s almost October. If you haven’t stashed some peppers in the freezer yet, what are you waiting for?!

It’s time to make those stuffed peppers, jalapeno poppers, and chili. Come to the Zanesville Farmers Market tomorrow to get our fresh picked, naturally grown peppers. Look for bell peppers, poblanos, hot banana, hot wax, jalapeno, cayenne, and habenero .

P.S. - Now more than ever, please don’t “wait until next week”. What will I have next week? I don’t know. Late fall is a gamble between weather, wildlife, and fewer hours of daily sunlight. Grab local produce now!

Still here, still preserving. Daily tasks, such as freezing extra bell peppers from last week’s market, add up. My freezers and pantry are full of homegrown food because of these small daily efforts. It’s also a great way to trash the kitchen daily 🤦🏻‍♀️ While I dread that first killing frost, I also kinda don’t 😂
