Exciting news our very first Dexter embryo was placed in a surogant cow roughly 60 days ago. We found out today that it took and we have a calf due in February.

As Dexter breeders, it is important to remember that newer genetics are not always superior to older bloodlines. While modern breeding programs have introduced many outstanding animals, the repeated use of a limited number of popular sires has, in some cases, increased the level of inbreeding within the breed.

Maintaining genetic diversity by preserving and utilizing older bloodlines can provide important benefits, including improved fertility, calving ease, structural soundness, and overall herd health. Excessive inbreeding may contribute to undesirable traits, such as larger birth weights and reproductive difficulties that can negatively affect both cows and calves.

Responsible breeding is not simply about chasing the latest genetics, but about carefully selecting animals that strengthen the long-term health, functionality, and sustainability of the Dexter breed. Sometimes looking back to proven, time-tested genetics is one of the best ways to move the breed forward.
