After careful consideration, we decided not to raise feeder lambs this year. Even with generous support in pasture space from our neighbors at former Singletary Farm, the math doesn’t work.

The capital expenses would put us in the negative $ even before accounting for extra labor, losses to predators and such. We can stretch it for 3 years, double the herd and still loose money.

When working full-time, one must choose what can realistically be done on our modest 5 acres.

Chickens were on their way to the butcher in RI at 6am this morning. First batch of the year fresh/never-frozen chicken this weekend (starting Friday evening).

Feeder pigs will be purchased in a next couple of weeks. Order yours for custom processing in the fall, otherwise we will have some individual cuts for purchase at a USDA-butcher prices.

You can split your beast with a friend (200-250lbs of hanging weight whole at $6/lb), but we cannot sell halves. Plus you get to say how you want it cut, even chops' thickness.

Big things! Our rodent control team has been proactively doubled.

Meet Buzz (aka Barsik), he is a RCOT (Rodent Control Officer Trainee). Along with Elaine (aka Lena), he will be patrolling the grounds and surrounding areas for excessive rodents.

He comes from streets of Pawtucket and is neutered, fully vaxxed and comes with negative test results for major feline maladies.

It will take a few weeks of adjustment before he gets to roam the neighborhood.

We would like to give a shoutout to our neighbors who are, luckily, chill about the whole farming thing which is not the case for some other farmers I know. We are located in suburbia with fairly small lots and house/population density not expected in a farming community.

The acts that made us warm inside over the last few years: lending tools, switching to organic fertilizers in case things leach, going halfsies on border tree removal, words of encouragement, calling/texting when animals get lose or misbehave on a public property, tolerating our 7 yo kid running around and more!

We get an occasional call/visit from health department and police about Sunday work, selling meat, odors, noise, but we try to minimize all the negatively perceived situations.

Talk to us if something is bothering you, we are more accommodating than you think OR we will gladly explain why we do something.

While the muscovy ducks are laying, you can ask for duck eggs to come with our hatching set! Currently only one 1-doz incubator is available, but returns will be coming in soon.

The only pickle: it takes them 5 weeks to hatch vs chickens’ 3 weeks.

Muscovy ducks have been a roller-coaster this spring:
+ 12 ducklings total hatched by 2 birds (happy) so far
- 1 drowned (sad)
+ 3 were incubated and accepted by moms (happy)
- 1 adult bird taken/eaten by coyote last night (sad)

(47 more eggs in the incubator, all candled as viable)
