When you’re thinking about crossbreeding, start by looking at your own herd.
What are your cows already doing well? Where would you like to make progress? The answers may depend on your forage, labor, climate, calving season, and how you market your calves.
It also helps to think beyond the next calf crop. Which heifers will you keep? What do you need your future cows to do? Can your operation manage the breeding and replacement plan year after year?
The goal is to build cattle that work for your conditions and your business. Good records and careful selection help you see whether the plan is moving you in the right direction.
What’s one trait or outcome you’d want to improve in your herd?
