K & J Farms K & J Farms is a little hobby farm/rescue located in Horton, MI. We have poultry, goats, sheep, mini horses and alpacas.

We sell eggs, fertilized eggs, chicks, alpaca fiber, yarns, and felts. We also rescue animals that are looking for sanctuary

Living on a farm is a blast, but it's also a lot of work and occasionally a sick animal. Chicken sickness is one of the worst to deal with because several different diseases and ailments all have the same symptoms. This little girl was found in her coop yesterday laying flat on her side and unable to move. She had been trying to lay one of her first eggs and I'm fairly certain she ended up with obturator paralysis because of it. Essentially the egg pressed against her obturator nerve which controls their limbs. She was paralyzed in the legs and could barely hold her head up or sit upright. I began the kitchen sink treatment and hit her with everything in the cabinet to try and give her a boost. Today she is able to move her legs some, she stood for a brief moment when I picked her up, and she can hold her head upright. Fingers crossed that we get a full recovery on her! She is one of the chickens that was dumped in the woods weeks ago, if she pulls through, I'm naming her Obbie. :)

Why do we rescue animals? Because it's not their fault that people don't take care of them. 13 chickens (8 of which are roosters) were dumped near the farm today. We recovered 12 of them. I'm hopeful that the last one will make it through the night and I can find him tomorrow. Unfortunately, We ran out of daylight and lost him in the thicket.
