Wagner Farms is hosting one of several sites collecting data on cereal rye nutrient release and soil test response. 🌱
Cereal rye was collected from another site and placed in a residue bag on a bare area for in-field monitoring and data collection every 15 days. 🗓️ Over a 60-day period, photos, soil samples, and biomass samples will be collected near residue bags containing the cereal rye.
👉 The goal of this project is to better understand when cereal rye releases nutrients, what nutrients are being released, and how soils respond over time. Understanding the nutrient release timing in cover crops helps maximize cover crop benefits and improve nutrient management planning. 💪🌽
This project is being conducted in collaboration with State Agronomist Jamie Patton using adapted and expanded cereal rye residue project protocols based on research conducted by Dan Marzu, UW–Extension Senior Nutrient and Pest Management Outreach Specialist, at the Marshfield Research Station.
