A benefit of rotational grazing, which allows the forage to rest and grow tall, is the creation of habitats for many animals like the golden finches in this video. Other animals that benefit from long forage are other birds, rabbits, deer, bugs, and more!

These girls are happy to be back in the routine of frequent moves to new pastures. After a long cold winter they quickly remember what to do when we open a new paddock and call for them. Yeah, you read that right…our cows come to a call of “come on cowwws!” 😆☺️

Our finisher herd has been grazing some nice long grass in our best silvopasture — land used to integrate livestock, forage, and trees. These three components work together to benefit the land and animals in many ways including shade for cattle, carbon sequestration, added organic matter from fallen leaves, less soil erosion, higher water retention, and diverse forage for cattle. 🌾🐮🌳

We’ve officially started our pasture rotations! Everyone is pretty excited about fresh grass. In the winter we keep our herds in one or two sections of pasture for an extended period of time, usually a month or more. This is called the sacrifice pasture since it doesn’t get much of a rest and is used pretty intensely with no chance to rest before the spring flush. These areas do receive some benefits like being heavily fertilized with manure and hay remnants. We’ll try to make it at least 30 days until we graze the sacrifice pasture for the first time — longer would be better but with cool temps, lack of rain, and less than ideal grass growth so far it’ll be hard to stretch the rest longer.
