So many cuties from this spring 🫶🏻 2-26 is high on the list of heifers to retain to become broods. Her mom is one of our long time reliable favorites, 06-20.

Gorgeous evening moving both the finisher herd and the brood herd! The field the finishers are in is an underrated piece of the farm. The sun shining through the locust trees and casting shadows is just beautiful.

Hi 👋🏻 we rarely show our faces here so we thought why not share these gorg pictures from Aly Ford and share about our operation!

Saul and I bought our original herd in the fall of 2019 starting with ten commercial bred heifers. Our brood herd includes those original ten girls, some of the calves they were pregnant with when we bought them, plus more we’ve retained over the years. The mommas that have been with us for years have acquired some names over time 😆 maybe we’ll introduce them by name at some point.

We also have a herd of finisher calves for our grassfed beef operation. All the animals that we harvest for meat are born and raised on the farm until they are about 30 months old.

For the calves we don’t raise for meat or retain for our brood herd, we sell as registered South Poll breeding stock or as finishers. The registered breeding stock will go on to be brood cows on another farm and the finishers will be used as meat for another farm’s operation.

We also raise some pigs out on pasture or in the woods for pastured pork. They’re great at rooting up weeds, rose bushes, thistles, and clearing undergrowth in the woods. We buy the piglets from two trusted sources because having a boar and a sow is a huge commitment that we aren’t interested in. We appreciate the pigs but the cows have our heart and are our real passion 🫶🏻

In addition to the animals we also have an Airbnb/Vrbo on the farm! It’s a beautiful 3 bedroom/2 bath log cabin with a great view and quiet surroundings. It doesn’t come with any farm experiences but it does provide a peaceful place to relax, recharge, and a home base for exploring beautiful Bath County. You can find the link to book in our bio 🏡

That is a pretty basic run down of our operation. As for us, we are both Bath County natives who didn’t think we would be back after college. After working at wineries and another sustainable farm we figured out that we enjoyed spending our days outside and working with our hands so here we are. This farm was built by Saul’s parents over a couple decades and we are lucky to be here and have the opportunity to farm the land and raise some animals. 🫶🏻

We’ve officially started our pasture rotations! Everyone is pretty excited about fresh grass. In the winter we keep our herds in one or two sections of pasture for an extended period of time, usually a month or more. This is called the sacrifice pasture since it doesn’t get much of a rest and is used pretty intensely with no chance to rest before the spring flush. These areas do receive some benefits like being heavily fertilized with manure and hay remnants. We’ll try to make it at least 30 days until we graze the sacrifice pasture for the first time — longer would be better but with cool temps, lack of rain, and less than ideal grass growth so far it’ll be hard to stretch the rest longer.
