Long post warning💕Today we traveled to the CSU Johnson Family Equine Center in Fort Collins with Mohon. Wow!!! So impressed!
I bought Mohon in 2019, a nice mare that originally came from Texas We settled in Nebraska and started noticing some issues.
Often she was tripping and even went down with me. On to Cactus Vet in Pine Bluffs Wy - Diagnosis’ - EPM- Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis in 2020. Something quite scary!
Originally, I was set to run barrels again. Maybe compete in something- God had another plan.
With the diagnosis of EPM and a move back home to the family ranch, the place I grew up, where I was big into 4-H, performance, showing, rodeo etc- I was challenged, how to use this nice mare when I couldn’t compete. She improved on the epm meds, repeated treatment Fall 2025, but she would never safely turn a barrel or team pen etc Fast Forward-
Every trip or drop of the hind end my mind went to epm. Finally, I connected and I ventured out with my new friend Amber and did a few amazing rides. Ever so mindful about a trip etc It was challenging for her, lots of emotions and trust for both of us and a great friend and mentor in Amber which led to RMNP, The Beaver etc Some tough riding.
I loved this mare, so darn sweet and a lot of try!
What finally would take me to CSU for a multi-veterinarian exam was a visit with our local Vet Lindsey and a girl trip to Sheridan Wy.
Renee my good friend from Ne, recently widowed and fighting to live a good life after the death of her husband. She wanted a girls trip and mountains. I sought out Tamara Mann, for a trip long over due with the toughest of toughs a gal who’s like my sister who lives in Sheridan- She pushed me to bring Mohon to Sheridan.
A ride in her arena, a few tears and hugs with my friends and CSU vet center was scheduled.
Mohons team included an Equine Neurology exam and another vet who did the lameness exam-X-rays and a determination of a hock and stifle issue that we can help her with. I’m simply amazed with the facility and team ! And Mohon, she was a class act and won over the team even leaving with braids in her mane. First was the Equine Neurological Vet and team followed by the Lamness Vet and team! What an awesome facility, professional and knowledgeable. No neurological issues! No more epm treatments. They found a couple issues with her hock and stifle and are we’re taking steps to help her. I couldn’t have been more proud of my mare, doing what was asked and as gentle as could be.
I have hope, determination and am in awe of how my life has laid out with a wonderful man, a seventh big life horse named Mohon who’s filling my memoir and the many possibilities in front of me.
