Took a Leap Farm

Took a Leap Farm A small farm in northern Maine raising Nigerian goats, with an emphasis on dairy We are a small farm-in-progress located in the far northern reaches of Maine.

As of April 2011, we're officially goatherds -- we now have a wonderful group of eighteen goats and are planning to build a creamery early next year. When we "took the leap" and moved from the Chicago 'burbs to rural northern Maine in 2003, we planned to build a hobby farm focused on a small herd of dwarf Nigerian goats for dairying. But then life -- jobs, travel, and the like -- interceded. Now,

nearly eight years later, we've revisited this idea. Although we originally planned to take a measured approach to all of this, we're making yet another leap, jumping in with both feet, and still wondering how the herd has grown to eighteen!

Garlic dill, roasted red pepper, and plain chèvre at the farm store today…kefir tomorrow (if I can find any quart jars in stock anywhere)!

The store fridge is practically overflowing with goodness: chèvre, feta, and kefir, which has been a surprise hit with folks.

And because it’s finally cooler (and because people have asked), sourdough bread is back!

The farm store is restocked! Garlic dill, spicy olive, and strawberry vanilla chèvre, a bit of feta, and peach mango kefir!

Come on out - open all day for self-service!

Come on out to the farm today - or any day, really. We've just restocked with chevre, feta, and kefir (mango guava and blueberry - soooo good!).

Just a quick farm store update: we have feta, garlic dill, chipotle, and sundried tomato+pesto, as well as kefir. Stop on out anytime!

We've also restocked the fridge with garlic dill and feta. No bread today, but we're open every day and plan to have bread, breakfast rolls, and more over the July 4th week. Stop on out -- 243 B Road in Houlton!

After your stop at the Houlton Community Market, swing by the farm...we've got some great stuff "in store"!

Seriously, it is taking every ounce of self-control not to slice up some sourdough, brush it with olive oil, and grill it...and then smear some Italian Herb chevre (a new flavor!) on it! We also have Spicy Olive, Chipotle, and (of course) Garlic Dill chevre and some feta in the fridge!

We're also stocking hummus and muhummara, a totally yummy sweet-and-savory Middle Eastern red pepper and walnut dip that is sooo addictive. Hey, come to think of it, you could spread some of that on grilled sourdough, too...

We'd love to see you -- remember we're open every day from 9a until 6p, and we're stocking new things every day!

We had an overwhelming response to cheese, bread, and hummus over the weekend, so we're restocking!

Right now, we have a limited amount of garlic dill and roasted red pepper chevre, as well as feta, and we're making both more garlic dill and some spicy olive for tomorrow. We're also making up more hummus, given how popular that was.

And bread...it went flying off the shelves! We're only able to produce a few loaves a day, so we've just pulled rosemary loaves from the oven to go along with the feta and olive sourdough alluded to below!

Come on by between 9-6 -- it's self-serve, although we'll try to come say hello if we're avaialble!

Little Falaina is all set to welcome fans of Took a Leap Farm cheese (and goats!) to the opening of our farm store today from 9a-6p! Hit the Houlton Community Market, then head out the B Road to top things off with some cheese and other yummies!

To kick off the farm store season, we have:

* Garlic and dill chevre
* Roasted red pepper chevre
* Feta
* Hummus (what goes better with feta!)
* Sourdough bread (plain and rosemary)

When you visit, leave us a note if you'd like to see something you don't see or if you want to place an order for a future day...one of the great things about doing things this way is that we can have a little more fun with our offerings AND better meet your cheese needs! We'll be keeping things stocked up for visitors every day...we'll post what we have regularly (and boy, do we have some great products coming through the summer), and if we need to close for a day, we'll share that here, as well.

We're located at 243 B Road in Houlton; the farm store is the door just past the deck. Just go on in and help yourselves...if one of us is handy, we'll pop out to say hello.

Since this is new for us, please share our post to let folks know that we haven't gone away...we're just mixing things up a little this year!

See you soon!
Kathryn & Rob (and Falaina)

Friends and fans:

After a lot of consdieration, we've decided to make a change in how we sell our products this summer. Rather than attending the Houlton Community Market on Saturdays, we'll be opening our farm store with cheese -- and some new products! -- beginning on Saturday, June 17th. Store hours will be 9-6 daily, and it'll be self-service, although if we're around, we'll be out to say hello.

We're super-busy with a number of projects this summer, and selling from the farm gives us a lot more flexiibility -- both in terms of the time commitment and how much we can experiment with our offerings. We have the perfect space to sell from here at the farm, and we'll be offering online ordering so that everything is ready for pick-up (and potentially delivery - we're still trying to figure that part out). We're excited to welcome folks back out to the farm --where they can get their cheese AND see the goats, if they choose.

We're bummed that the Community Market won't be part of our summer schedule this year, but we wish our fellow vendors the best for a productive market season...and we'll definitely see them as shoppers throughout the summer. Visit the market, then come get your cheese and other goodies out on the B Road!

We look forward to seeing you beginning June 17th - and we thank you for your continued support of our endeavors!

Fletch and Griswold here, reporting from the barn...

Check out the jumpers for jumpers! We are bouncing with joy in our stylish new duds, made with love by our new friend, Cheryl! She lives in some place called New York, and she loves to knit sweaters for kids like us. Can you believe how nice she was to send us these? We got dressed up and modeled for Miss Cheryl...and all of you. We bet you haven't seen anything this cute all day! Tomorrow, we're gonna dress up Turtle Wexler...she doesn't have as big of a belly as we do!

Thank you, Miss Cheryl...you know how to make a little goat's day!
