We are down to 16 females and 10 males after the initial cuts. Before January, when we seperate the breeding pens, we need to be at 2 males and 6-8 females.

VERY FORGIVING GARLIC!

We have been growing the same garlic for about 10 years. We got our first seed garlic by bartering with eggs from our since departed friend Jo Rellime. Jo ran a homestead group that sparked the fire in us to grow much of our own food.

"Jo's Garlic" as it is known to many was grown by her for 20+ years before we got ours. We only know it's a hard-neck variety, but no idea which, so it is just Jo's.

This is a very forgiving garlic! It grows well regardless of your skill level. Over the years, we've planted it late, harvested late, improperly stored it, and gotten it wet while curing. Last year's was harvested and cured and then sat in a bowl, on a table, in a south window's sun. With the farm move and the chaos, we just never got to processing it. Well, this week, over a year from harvesting, I did it, and it was PERFECT. Only 2 heads were bad out of 25. We are set for smoked garlic powder until we process THIS year's which was planted at the new place...in FEBRUARY! (the usual time to plant is October!)

Took the sign down from the farm and it is at the new place. Debating a name change for the page. Maish Meadow 2.0? or just Maish Meadow? Once we are no longer raising cattle, we do intend to plant more prairie natives, so it will be a meadow 😍🏵🌾🌿

Update!

We sold two yearling heifers last night to friends who are new to cattle, just like we were 4 years ago. We delivered them, along with our yearling steers Charlie and Rufus, to Derek Fisher's farm (Firegrass Regenerative). He will keep them all until we are ready for them. The new cattle owners are putting in fencing, so will be ready sooner, but since we don't have winter shelter or pasture, we will get the steers in spring.

We have had 10 calves born here at the farm. All born easily and uneventfully in the field. We wouldn't have done so well as newbies keeping cattle without Derek's constant mentorship. He and his family are 'salt of the earth' (if you don't know the meaning of that quote, please look it up), and selling 4 of those calves to 2 brand new cattle owners, for us, is paying it forward.

As far as the farm sale, it looks like we won't be closing tomorrow due to some hiccups, and we are hoping things iron themselves out soon.
