What would the Instagram all or nothing movement say about this picture? Cereal is processed, protein products strip important nutrients, fruit has too much sugar, bread is the devil, eggs are too high in cholesterol. etc.
New Year, New Diet?
Instead of promising yourself a better lifestyle by following a restricted one size fits all plan for 3 weeks then back to normal the other 49 weeks, learn a simple skill that can help you become aware of what is on your plate and what is going in your body. Macronutrients have gotten the low end of the stick lately with influencers/dietitians/and nutritionists discussing the negative effects of focusing on âcounting macrosâ or calculating calories.
Stop.
Macros are like a car engine. They are the driving force behind all our food, our weight and how it shifts throughout the years. The other factors are just as important (mindful eating, stress, exercise, sleep, processed vs natural, brown vs white, supplementation), but without an âengineâ, there are no other factors to be considered.
In both plates there is a protein, carb, and a fat source to make it balanced and keep you full until your next meal. I preach the importance of a balanced plate with all my clients so they understand in the beginning what is important and what they can worry about later in their journey. Whether youâre getting carbs from bread or cereal, or protein from a bar or an egg, itâs important to look at your plate and understand what each food is supplying you so you can make better decisions about what you want to include with each meal.
Simplify, know the basics, then begin to focus on other factors. Our first math class isnât calculus. Your first step to a healthier shouldnât be stressing over cholesterol in an egg or sugar in a fruit.
