Today was a very interesting day for beekeeping. As I may have mentioned in a previous post, I have a hive that had to be moved off of my property because it became aggressive. The plan was to find the queen today and kill her. Then tomorrow I was going to install a new queen to replace her. Well, when we opened up the hive, there was no queen. It looks like she died on her own. I have no idea what happened to her but she is gone. The problem is that since the hive became queenless, one of the other bees decided that she would try to take over the responsibility of being the queen. I mean, someone had to step up so you can’t blame her for trying to help. But the problem with the laying worker bees is that they can only lay drones (males). So you would think that my problem solved itself but it’s actually a much bigger problem now because if you install a queen with a laying worker, the laying worker is going to kill the new queen because she has appointed herself as the new queen even though she really isn’t. It’s impossible to find the laying worker so instead we had to install some new open brood from another hive which releases a pheromone that for some reason causes the bees to think that there’s a real queen in there that’s laying eggs. So we basically just tricked the bees so that the laying worker will stop and in two weeks I will come back and try to sneak in a new queen. It may or may not work but if we don’t put new brood in there, the entire hive will eventually die because only boys will be born and they are useless. So…. truth is that the world of beekeeping is complex but fascinating.
It’s a perfect day for pulling the onions and planting melons and squash!!
Today is a great day for beekeeping. I had to add another story so this hive is now officially taller than me. Going to need a ladder! 🐝 🪜
This beautiful red cabbage made an amazing slaw for my fish tacos! Yum!!
It’s tomato season! But that also means that it is squirrel season. 😞 🍅
Today is a perfect day for some hardcore gardening. We are pulling some of our onions, cabbages and broccoli to make space for peppers!! Look at this gigantic Verona cabbage! 🤩
My girls like hanging out their Aunt Maru and Uncle Kristofer’s house. They have the best pollen over there. The bees pay them back with lots of tasty honey!
Spring has sprung and it brought us a new baby chick! It’s a tiny little silkie baby!! Hoping it’s a girl so it can stay!!
Crazy hive visit today. I have a really pi**ed off queen in hive two. We are going to need to requeen. But hive one is very happy and their honey is delicious!!

Pecky with the Good Hair is feeling a little obnoxious today. She has a lot to say.... #pecky #hensofinstagram #backyardchickens #thequeenshamlet #silkiesofinstagram #silkiechicken
After yesterday’s chaos, things are back to normal. It is a busy day in the hive. It is sunny and 60 degrees and these girls are taking full advantage of this gorgeous day. They are coming in full of bright yellow pollen. That’s the beauty of beekeeping in Houston... mild winters result in happy bees. Happy bees result in more honey!!! #beesofinstagram #bees🐝 #beekeepers #urbangarden #backyardbeekeeping #houstonbees #honeybees #pollenators

As soon as I open the coop door, Mr Chickling stops crowing and acts like an angel. “What mom!?!?!?” 😇 🐓 #roostersofinstagram #sorryneighbors #thequeenshamlet #chickensofinstagram #backyardroosters #urbanroosters #crowing
Well, it turns out that Mr Chickling is not only an early riser but also an early developer. Unfortunately, he’s found his voice. Roosters usually start to crow at about 4-5 months old. But not Mr Chickling. Nope. He decided to start at 3 months old. So tomorrow he’s moving to a farm. He will be missed... except at 5:30am. I formally issue an apology to all of my neighbors. 😣 🐓 🤦🏻♀️ #roostersofinstagram #backyardchickens #backyardroosters #chickensofinstagram #movingtoafarm #crowingrooster #sorryneighbors
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be blow drying a chicken in my bathroom. #pleasestopraining #silkiesofinstagram #blowdryingmychickens #wetchicken #hensofinstagram #chickensofinstagram #chickeninthehouse #urbanchickens #backyardchickens #chickeninthecity #thequeenshamlet
So now that the election is finally over, I can refocus on posting pictures of chickens. 😂 On October 8th our first and only baby was hatched. Unfortunately the others didn’t make it. But Chikira has turned out to be a great mom to Chickling. #babychicks #hensofinstagram #chickens #chickensofinstagram #backyardchickens #urbangarden
Remember my broody girl, Chikira? Well her dream of becoming a mother is just a couple of weeks away from coming true!! @thegardenhen gave her 5 fertilized eggs and she has been taking such good care of them. So I’m going to be a grandmother y’all! 😂
