Happy National Gumbo Day!

I started LA Browns in Lafayette, Louisiana, one of the places that gave the world some of its best dishes, so gumbo will always feel like home to me. Mine starts with a homemade roux and is loaded with shrimp, crawfish tails, blue crabs, and crabmeat. Yesterday was also Southern Food Heritage Day, and it's a good reminder of why I cook the way I do: with tradition, patience, and a lot of love.

Chapter 49.

My mind goes back to December 2021. I was admitted to St. Luke's (in the medical center) and to the conversation I was having with Dr. Nair when he told me my heart function was at 6% and that I had months to live--that was five years ago. So many beautiful things have happened since. I pray that God is pleased. I pray my children are proud of me.

It feels like yesterday...

My feature on TODAY.com was such an honor. It's an honest look at what I went through — years of heart complications that were repeatedly dismissed, a heart attack, and eventually a heart transplant — all while building LA Browns and showing up for my family and clients.

I've shared my story publicly because I want other women, especially women of color, to advocate for themselves and pay attention to their bodies. It's a reminder of the heart — literally and otherwise — behind every dish we serve.

Every chef has that one dish people can't stop talking about.

For me, you could say it's the sweet potato cornbread — a recipe that's been requested at nearly every event we've catered, and one of the dishes that first put LA Browns on the map.
