In order to receive a USDA organic label, produce must limit pesticide use to a certain level and only certain types of pesticides may be used. Other organic foods like dairy and meat must be produced without hormones or antibiotics, as relevant. While you can’t know exactly where it’s been and how it’s been grown, organic food is the second-best option to growing your own produce.
Food grown non-organically is referred to as conventionally-grown. Conventional food may contain pesticides under a more liberal legal limit. Conventional dairy and meat may be produced using USDA-approved antibiotics and hormones.
TYPES OF ORGANIC FOOD
When you think of organic food, your mind probably goes to fruits and vegetables first. While they may be the most common organic offerings, there are also benefits to eating organic dairy, meat, fish, and seafood. All of these types of organic food are readily available in grocery stores.
ORGANIC FRUITS
Fruit is one of the most common types of organic food. Conventional fruit tends to have a heavy pesticide residue, which makes them a good candidate for choosing organic.
Since insects are attracted to sweet, fruity smells, don’t expect your organic fruit to look “perfect.” While farmers will choose the best produce to sell, the absence of pesticides means that they may have blemishes or marks on their skin. However, they will taste just as good if not better than conventional fruit.

Organic meat is healthier for you. Unlike the factory-raised meat products that dominate in stores organic meat is better for you as it is free of any added growth hormones, antibiotics, genetically modified feeds (GMO’s), and other drugs. These animals are fed organic feed and are raised in a healthier environment. It may be more expensive, but organic meat is a wise investment for your health.

1. Start out small and purchase foods you eat most often. If you are new to buying organic food and don’t want to break the bank simply choose 1 or 2 foods that you consume on a regular basis and switch to the organic versions.

2. Buying organic food in season is cheaper. Buying any produce in season is cheaper because there is more of that food product available.

3. Read ingredient food labels. Look for the Canadian Organics label on all organic products and make sure to read the ingredient list to know which ingredients are in fact organic and which ones may not be.

4. Buy organic foods from local farmers markets. This way you will know how it is grown and what’s in season. Not only that, it tastes better! I don’t believe anyone can argue that a fruit that has travelled hundreds even thousands of miles ripening along the journey tastes better then a fresh and local product.

5. Prioritize organic foods when on a budget. Healthier option to pick foods that have a thinner outer skin (i.e. less environmental protection) for your organic choices such as leafy greens (lettuce, and spinach), tomatoes, bell peppers, potatoes, apples, pears, peaches, and berries.

6. Winter is the time to use your freezer. Buying organic fruits and vegetables when they are the cheapest (in season) and then freezing them for the winter months is a great way to save money and stock up on your favourite items.

7. Go online to shop. If you don’t have a local farmers market available in your area to purchase organic foods there are alternatives. Online shopping has become less expensive and a convenient way for consumers to have unlimited access to the products that they want all year round.

9. Organic Foods taste better. This makes perfect sense when you are educated on how foods are grown and animals are fed and raised. Organic and buying local means all the foods you purchase are as fresh and contain all of the nutrition otherwise lost during premature harvest and transport.

10. Grow your own fruits and vegetables! Start out small with carrots, potatoes, radishes, even tomatoes and you will have fresh foods right in your backyard. Not only that but you can’t more local and fresh then that! Plus, growing your own produce is not a bad way to go green and save some money in the process.

Nowadays, if you want to adhere to a certain diet or seek out a specific type of food, you can find it nearly anywhere. Take, for example, chain grocery stores: Many of them are now carrying more organic produce than ever before.

But if you’re not already an organic devotee, you might be wondering: What exactly makes produce organic?

“Organic produce has a specific set of qualifications that must be met, such as they must be produced without genetic engineering, ionizing radiation, synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers,” explains Tonya Harris, environmental toxin expert and author of The Slightly Greener Method: Detoxifying Your Home is Easier, Faster, & Less Expensive Than You Think.

She adds that instead, organic products must be made using agricultural production that minimizes the use of synthetic materials while conserving biodiversity or the ecological variety and variability that maintains and improves the quality of soil and water, supports ecological balance and minimizes the use of synthetic materials.

Who oversees the certification of this produce, which can come with labels like “100 percent organic,” “organic,” “made with organic,” and “organic ingredients”? Harris says that the organic industry is overseen by authorized agents of the National Organic Program (NOP), which is part of USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service and follows all USDA organic regulations.

Organic food has been a major trend with farmers and consumers alike for the past decade. These days, you can buy organic food in just about every grocery store. But many people don’t even know exactly what organic food is. Let’s dig into the five main types of organic food and the benefits they can bring!

WHAT IS ORGANIC FOOD?

ORGANIC VEGETABLES
Vegetables are another common organic purchase. Since their peels and skins are often eaten, they are directly subjected to pesticide sprays. This means that eating organic vegetables can make a big difference in the amount of pesticide residue you and your family are exposed to.
