CASE STUDY: DoubleTree Ranch Park: The new park in Highland Village, just north of Dallas, features walking trails, a splash pad, a large pavilion, open areas for recreation and sustainable stormwater management. The focal point of the integrative landscape consists of bioswales to detain, convey, and treat stormwater runoff, while providing an aesthetic and imaginative landscape for the park goers. The unpredictable and frequent storms, combined with clay soils, forced the design team to create a solution that would perform under extreme conditions while keeping the long-term maintenance costs low.

CASE STUDY: The Sazerac House, an interactive cocktail museum in New Orleans, opened in October of 2019. The 48,000 square-foot historic building dates to the 1860s and was left unoccupied recently for more than 30 years. When the Sazerac Company decided to develop the property, they had to address stormwater runoff, something that the building wasn’t originally designed to manage. Knowing the City of New Orleans requires developments over 5,000 SF to detain to treat the first 1.25" of stormwater runoff, how do you manage that runoff from a 19th century building in an urbanized downtown location with zero lot line, a 100-year-old foundation with brick footers, and a limited footprint?

CASE STUDY: Because these types of developments are in such proximity to the Trinity River, TRWD focuses more on water quality pollutants such as bacteria, nutrients, hydrocarbons and metals that require filtration technology versus gravity settling or hydrodynamic separating devices. Another challenge was how to direct and slow down stormwater runoff from the apartment buildings and parking garage to 3 planter areas.

FEATURED PRODUCT: Flex MSE is a perfect solution for widespread problems of control and land loss. Flex MSE creates reinforced vegetated slopes that decrease erosion and maximize available land. The Flex MSE Patented system protects soils from erosion without altering hydrology – providing a permanent, green solution. Perfect for culvert headwalls, unstable stream banks, in-stream structures, and flood protection, Flex MSE is ideal for anywhere land meets water – it limits Heat Island effects on water, toxic leachates, and allows for rapid regrowth of vegetation in riparian zones.

It was the flood water forces resulting from Hurricane Harvey that damaged both the supporting hillside and Bayou Place to the extent that the building needed to be closed. CASE STUDY - You Can’t Have a Park Without the Trees! The design team at Ten Eyck wanted a solution to provide enough soil volume so that each tree could reach its full maturity and life expectancy. Structural soil cells from CityGreen, called Stratavault, were chosen to provide 50,000 CF of soil for all the trees in the park. Stratavault is a modular design that provides structural support for pavement surfaces and creates a soil matrix of healthy, uncompacted soil. Just like every other construction project, designers are tasked with creating a design that meets their intent, but also keeping construction costs low.

In this month's installment of Stormwater Shorts, Matthew Smith, Stormwater Systems Manager, takes a look at the stormwater solution at Audubon Grove, a small residential community in Houston, Texas. The LID-based stormwater management solution at Audubon Grove consists of two major bioswales, one on each side of the community. Designed to capture a high percentage of all water falling on the entire community, the bioswales then hold, treat and slowly drain the community's stormwater runoff.

DOCTOR, WE NEED A LONGER HOSE STAT! With most SWQM system cleanouts, a vacuum truck typically drives up to the stormwater feature that needs to be cleaned out, a hose is dropped in and debris is vacuumed out. However, in this instance, The Carrington Place Apartments layout did not offer any possible truck access and manually cleaning the type of SWQM feature would be impractical. CASE STUDY: How to Manage 21st Century Runoff from a 19th Century Downtown NOLA Building.
The Sazerac House, a new interactive cocktail museum in New Orleans, just opened in October of 2019. The 48,000 square-foot, historic building stands on the corner of Canal and Magazine Streets. The historic building dates to the 1860s, just yards away from the original Sazerac Coffee House. The building was left unoccupied for more than 30 years. When the Sazerac Company decided to develop the property, they had to address stormwater runoff, something that the building wasn’t originally designed to manage. So, how do you manage over 2,000 cubic feet of stormwater runoff from a 19th century building in an urbanized downtown location? READ MORE: http://bit.ly/2PAJlmi

Thanks to Construction EcoServices for this write up. When you combine the booming Riverfront development area with aggressive management ordinances in New Orleans and a small urban footprint, effective stormwater management can be a challenge. Combining the stormwater design expertise of our team at Kyle Associates with the innovative products that Construction EcoServices bring to the table, gives you results like this! See full article @ https://bit.ly/3eEY37w

At the forefront of innovative project solutions, Kent Design Build continues to lead the industry! When Bullard Medical Center in New Orleans East needed stormwater management Duplantis Design Group & Kent Design Build teamed with Construction EcoServices to provide PowerBlock – a transformative permeable pavement solution. Kent Design Build directed the installation process and Construction EcoServices verified installation met the 1,000 in/hour specification. Aimed at managing and further mitigating localized flooding in urban environments this 3-in-1 solution was able to exceed regulatory requirements – proving solutions that go beyond is the real success story here!

Have you ever come back to your car following a rainstorm, to find that it is now sitting in a puddle? Then, immediate dread sinks in as you realize you now get to look forward to a drive with wet socks / shoes. The construction of parking lots is critical for many reasons – including giving stormwater somewhere to go versus creating puddles around your car.

Due to its wet climate and history of flooding, the City of New Orleans has a strict code governing stormwater management. This code came into play during the design / construction of a parking lot for a new medical facility in the area. A regular parking lot with asphalt would create a large impermeable surface, causing flooding as the stormwater would have nowhere to go (prior to the construction of the parking lot, it would filter into the soil). To counteract this concern and meet the code requirements, PowerBLOCK permeable pavers were chosen. These 4.5” tall pavers have infiltration rates over 1,000 inches per hour and are easy to maintain due to their open joints (they don’t require stone infill).

Thanks to our Louisiana distributor with Construction EcoServices for sharing this installation with us!

Have you been to the Treme Center in the last few days?

If so, you may have noticed the newly installed 14 highbeam overcup oak trees! And it's not only trees. Below the surface there are soil cells placed to allow the roots to spread more freely and to absorb more rainwater. Our hope is that these trees will help capture more runoff from the Treme Center while providing so many more benefits like cooling down the area during the summertime and beautifying the neighborhood.

This project would not be possible if it weren't for all of the partnerships. Water Wise Treme Neighborhood Champions envisioned the project and selected it as the runner up project to be funded by the Institute for Sustainable Communities . Cheryl R Austin, Executive Director of the Greater Treme Consortium played a leadership role bringing this project to life with her dedication and perseverance. Dana Brown & Associates, Inc. (Dana Nunez Brown, Delaney McGuinness and Gaylan Williams) provided their green infrastructure technical expertise and oversight and utilized their partnerships for the donation of the trees and soil cells. The trees were donated by Select Trees Enterprises and the soil cells were donated by Construction EcoServices. Boines Construction (Mike) removed over 400sq ft of concrete and excavated the soil to make room for these large trees that weighed 1,600lbs each! Rotolo Consultants Inc. Landscaping installed the trees in the ground. Finally, Angela Chalk at Healthy Community Services and (owner of Bullet's Sports Bar) allowed us to store the trees in the 7th Ward and Mr. Winfred Dalcour kept the trees watered in the heat while they were being stored. Thank you everyone for making this project possible!
