Monterey House candy

Monterey House candy Monterey House milk candy They used to bring it to your table discreetly nestled in your chips.

Kids would reach to the bottom before the bowl could hit the table. It made Monterey House the numero uno place to eat in the greater Houston area!

Family behind Houston Mexican candy tradition hopes for revival

For decades, Jesse Bocanegra and his family made leche quemada, the milk candy famous at restaurants like Monterey House. Now, another generation is working on its return.

I was given some milk candy today that tastes similar to the good stuff from Monterey House. The candy is soft, much softer than MH. The label says Leche y Miel Dulceria, 281.448.3999. It was purchased from a restaurant on Kuykendahl, unfortunately the person who gave me the candy can't remember the exact name. Perhaps it was La Ranchera or El Ranchero?

Have you ever noticed that "Monterey" in the Monterey House logo is misspelled? Today I was talking to a person that has been involved indirectly with the Houston Tex-Mex scene since the 1970's. He tells us that the unique spelling was not on purpose. At the time the founders simply did not know any better! If true that's pretty funny. One other thing- we have a name and number of a person that should be able to answer some questions about the candy. Besides where to find it, what would you like to know about the famous Monterey House Candy?

Found a candy shop in a flea market on US 59 at Little York that sells a milk candy that is really close to the MH candy. The flavor might be identicle, the texture isn't quite the same.

When we are talking about Monterrey House candy we are not referring to the pralines that were sold at the register. The candy that was in the chips tasted a lot better than the pralines. There are a few internet sites that claim to have the recipe to the MH candy. They mention using pecans, pralines have pecans, the MH candy didn't have pecans! Just wanted to clarify this.

Any Houstonian worth their weight in sugar remembers the candy Monterrey House used to put in their chips. It's been gone a while but no one who tasted the delicious treat can forget it!
