PLEASE READ ENTIRE INFO BEFORE GIVING ME ANY ADVICE... Update on our filly born on Thursday. Her dam was a maiden, and although at first she nickered and loved the fily, it soon turned nasty. Vet called, we went through sedation (four times the normal amount) and finally had to twitch the mare for the filly to nurse. Then we milked the mare and made sure the filly got ALL the colostrum. Once that was done, we did the 'love drug' protocol, which is usually hugely successful. Not in this instance. I would hold the mare every few hours so the filly could nurse and kept this up until Friday when more help arrived for me. We tried the love drug protocol again. This time it 'seemed' successful and the mare let the filly nurse normally at least three times as we watched that evening. In the morning, the mare had a huge change of heart and started attacking the filly. I spent another day holding the mare for nursing but did have to separate them. Sunday, a friend arrived with two possible nurse mares. One that had a foal at side, but was known to let other foals nurse from her, and the other had lost a foal recently. We went through the protocols with both and neither would accept the filly. However, at the end of trying, we did try the filly on milk replacer in a bucket and SUCCESS, she drank like a champ. Five days of hardly any sleep, but we got to a point where I think we are going to make it. Now the filly has a buddy in my mini mare, Thelma and things are looking much better! Good thing this is my very last foal... oh and I did try to find goats milk without success so we went with a known milk replacer.
