Open Farm Days are back at the Blackwood Skyfarm. 🌱

High above downtown Houston, the Skyfarm is a place to get your hands in the soil, learn what’s growing in our city, and better understand the plants that feed us.

Join us on select Wednesday evenings for a hands-on lesson centered around one of the crops growing at the farm. We’ll explore how each plant grows, what it needs to thrive in Houston, when and how to harvest it, and ways to bring it from the garden into your own kitchen. Open Farm Days are designed to give you practical knowledge you can take home - whether you already have a garden or are simply curious about where your food comes from.

🌿 09/23 — Cabbage
Get to know this cool-season staple, from planting and tending cabbage to understanding when a head is ready to harvest and how to make the most of it in the kitchen.

🌿 09/30 — Swiss Chard
Learn about one of the garden’s most generous leafy greens—how to grow and continually harvest Swiss chard, care for it through the season, and use both its leaves and colorful stems.

🌿 10/21 — Kale
Take a closer look at kale as a cool-weather crop: how it grows, how changing temperatures affect it, and how to harvest it in a way that keeps the plant producing.

🌿 10/28 — Roselle
Meet one of the Skyfarm’s more distinctive plants. We’ll explore roselle from the garden up, including the brilliant red calyces it produces and their culinary uses.

Water is one of our most precious resources, and how much of it we use it to grow food truly matters.

Through regenerative farming practices at the Blackwood Skyfarm, we've reduced water usage by 75% while continuing to cultivate healthy soil, thriving crops, and a resilient urban ecosystem.

By building living soil, increasing organic matter, and working with nature instead of against it, every drop goes further. Regeneration isn't just about growing food—it's about stewarding the resources that make it possible.

Healthy soil doesn't just grow food—it safeguards our future. Every drop saved is an investment in the generations that follow. 🌱💧

As Houston settles into another summer of triple-digit heat, we're taking a seasonal pause from our public Open Farm Days and Volunteer Days at the Blackwood Skyfarm.

While it's not great up on the roof right now for humans, we assure you the farm itself still thrives through the Summer months. Over the last several summers, our team has worked diligently to increase organic matter, protect soil microbes, and create a living ecosystem capable of withstanding some of the harshest growing conditions our city can offer.

This is one of the lessons the Skyfarm was built to explore.

Perched atop POST Houston—a building never originally designed to host a farm—the Skyfarm serves as a living laboratory for what elevated urban agriculture can offer our cities. Beyond producing food, green spaces like these help reduce heat island effects, support biodiversity, improve stormwater management, and reconnect people with the natural systems that sustain urban life. Rooftop temperatures in downtown Houston can soar well above 170°F, the Skyfarm consistently remains significantly cooler thanks to years of intentional soil-building, plant diversity, and regenerative land stewardship.

The Skyfarm was founded as a model for what's possible when regenerative agriculture meets innovative urban design. Every summer reminds us that healthy soil is more than a growing medium. It is infrastructure. It cools, stores water, supports life, and helps create resilience in places where concrete and asphalt often dominate.

We'll return in September with cooler temperatures, a new harvest, and fresh opportunities to learn, grow, and get your hands in the soil.

Until then, stay cool, stay curious, and remember: the future of our cities may be greener than we think.

Fair well, August 🌱♥️👨‍🌾

Over the past few years, August Stubler has helped shape Blackwood Skyfarm into far more than a rooftop farm. He turned it into a classroom, a living lab, & a place of connection to the land right in the heart of downtown Houston.

As Lead Skyfarmer, August stewarded the health of our soil, cultivated abundant harvests, & created countless opportunities for people to reconnect with the natural world. Through volunteer days, workshops, Open Farm Days, & everyday conversations among the beds, he has helped build a community rooted in curiosity, care, & a deeper understanding of where our food comes from.

Many of the lessons shared at the Skyfarm carry August finger prints. The Skyfarm would not be what it is today without his hands in the soil.

------

Words from August on the Skyfarm, & what comes next for this incredible agroecologist:

"After three years with the Blackwood Educational Land Institute, I will be stepping into the Farm Program Manager position with Plant It Forward. I will be helping to coordinate their Apprenticeship, build out curriculum, and inform best practices.

I am incredibly grateful for the companionship of our students, Apprentices, Farmers Kimberly and Sarah, and the bees. My time at the Skyfarm has been marked by incredible transition, both within myself, the land, and the community around the Skyfarm. That is the nature of relation!

I hope that everyone who visited the Skyfarm has felt in some way that they were home. Through difficult, uncertain times and celebratory moments, our community and the Earth hold us. We must care for each other, share all that we can, and give thanks for the gifts we receive every day. I am excited for everything to come, for us all."

- August Stubler

As August prepares for his next chapter, we want to express our deepest gratitude for his leadership, passion, & commitment to Blackwood's mission. We are excited to see where his path leads, & know he will continue planting seeds of positive change wherever he goes.

Please join us in thanking August for everything he has given to the Skyfarm, & wishing him well on the journey ahead. 🌱

Killdeers have returned to the Skyfarm! 🐦

We have been patiently awaiting the first Killdeer babies of the season to hatch and they are finally here.

Their guardians are both staying nearby and calling out to the babies to let them know they are safe here. Soon enough they'll be running around, growing, learning, and living off the offerings of our Skyfarm.

In the middle of central Houston, surrounded by concrete, traffic, and development, these small moments matter deeply. As Houston continues to grow, urban ecological spaces become increasingly important. Every patch of native planting, every source of water, every healthy soil system creates refuge.

Seeing Killdeer choose the Skyfarm as a nesting site reminds us that when we build ecosystems instead of landscapes, life is better for everyone - not only for people, but for the wildlife that has always called this region home.
