☀️SUMMER COOLING IDEAS FOR CHICKENS 🐔

Summers can be brutal for our flock, so here’s a giant list of ways to help our chickens stay comfortable!
TOP 15 WAYS to keep chickens COOL ❄️:
(Feel free to add yours via comments)
1.🌳 Shade, shade, shade!
Install shade cloth or put up umbrellas over runs. A 50%-75% shade cloth can often lower temperatures underneath by around 10–15°F, depending on airflow and conditions. Simply doubling layers doesn’t equal double the cooling, but extra shade can help if it still allows good ventilation.
2.💨 Fans
A simple box fan or outdoor fan doesn’t cool the air itself, but it increases airflow, helping birds lose heat more efficiently.
3.🌬️ Swamp Cooler
Perfect for boujee chickens like mine. Great to run during the hottest parts of the day.
4.💦 Misters
Great in dry climates! A fine mist cools the surrounding air through evaporation. (In very humid areas, they may not be as effective.)
5.🚰 Multiple water stations
Instead of one big waterer, place several around the run so lower-ranking birds always have easy access to cool water.
6.🧊 Frozen gallon jugs
Freeze milk jugs or 2-liter bottles and place them in waterers or around the coop. They slowly release coolness without watering everything down. If you use distilled water for incubating eggs, save those jugs!
7.🍉 Cold/Frozen treats
Watermelon, cucumber, frozen peas, berries, or chilled lettuce can provide hydration and enrichment.
8.🛁 Kiddie pools or shallow trays
Some chickens enjoy standing in cool water, though many just drink from it. Keep it shallow and refresh often.
9.⛲ Solar-powered fountain
Adding one to a shallow pool may help keep the water moving and fresher while encouraging birds to drink. I use a bubbler and disc to keep clean.
10.🪵 Wood chips or mulch
A thick layer can stay cooler than bare dirt and helps prevent mud around water stations. Bonus - it’s free locally!
11.🏡 Excellent ventilation
Open coops with plenty of airflow are much better than tightly enclosed buildings. Hot air needs a place to escape.
12.🧱 Cool pavers or concrete blocks
Place them in the shade or spray them with water occasionally so birds can lie against them. You can also put them in pools.
13.🌿 Create cool zones
Plant shrubs, sunflowers, or vines around the run to provide natural shade and cooler microclimates.
14.🥣 Dust baths in the shade
Move or create dust bathing areas where they stay shaded all afternoon.
15.🧊 Freeze feed pans
Chill metal bowls or shallow pans before putting out treats so they stay cooler longer.
* Make sure to avoid overcrowding - Extra space means better airflow and less body heat trapped in one area.
