There’s a story behind this one that feels too good not to tell, and this one means a lot to me personally.
Not that long ago, M Cody Francisco would probably be the first person to tell you that he was not exactly the president of the BCI fan club. 😂
He knew us from the outside. He had opinions. He had assumptions. And honestly, I think that’s part of what makes this story mean so much to me.
Over time, something shifted.
Cody and I became co-chairs of the Lone Star College ITP Advisory Board, and that first board meeting was actually the first time we had ever really worked together.
And sitting on the table at that very first meeting were little bracelets BCI had brought that said:
Be the Good.
Unbeknownst to me, Cody quietly picked one up that day and took it with him.
I had absolutely no idea.
Then, months later, the night of our Back-to-School Training, Cody stood in front of our interpreters to close out the night. As he started telling this story, he reached into his pocket and pulled out that same bracelet.
The one he had taken from that very first board meeting.
I don’t even know if he realized how much that moment meant to me.
Because somewhere between that first meeting and him standing in front of our team with that bracelet still in his pocket, a whole lot had changed.
Over those months, Cody and I had started having real conversations about the interpreting profession, the Deaf community, leadership, what was working, what wasn’t, and what we both hoped this field could look like in the future.
And somewhere in all of those conversations, we started seeing that maybe we weren’t as far apart as we once thought.
Cody told our interpreters that those three words had stayed with him.
They challenged him to open his mind, open his heart, connect with people, and actually look for the good instead of assuming he already knew the whole story.
And eventually, he said he started seeing the good in BCI.
The good in our people.
The good in what we had already built.
And, most importantly, the good in what we could build together.
What started as two people who probably never imagined they would end up on the same team somehow turned into conversations about what BCI could become, where we could grow, and how much more good we could do for the Deaf community, interpreters, clients, students, and families we serve.
And somewhere along the way, Cody realized this might not just be another career move.
In his words, maybe it was his next assignment.
So after keeping this one under wraps for a little while, I am ridiculously excited to finally say it publicly:
Cody Francisco has officially joined Bayou City Interpreting as our Chief Operating Officer.
If you know Cody, you already know what he brings to the table. He has so much experience in this profession, he knows this industry inside and out, and he has built relationships and earned the respect of people all over our community. He is smart, strategic, incredibly knowledgeable, and he sees things from angles that I honestly just don’t sometimes. He challenges me, makes me think bigger, and can take one of the 900 ideas flying around in my brain and somehow turn it into an actual plan. 😂
And I really don’t take it lightly that someone with his experience and everything he has already accomplished chose to bring all of that here. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cody and what he has built throughout his career, and I am so excited about what we are going to build together.
BCI is growing. We’re stepping into new spaces. We’re strengthening what already exists while dreaming much bigger about what comes next.
And I cannot think of a better reminder for this next chapter than the three words that somehow became part of Cody’s journey here in the first place:
See the good.
Choose the good.
Be the Good.
