Field deconstruction keeps moving along! (The horses are carefully supervising from the NEIGHboring field to make sure I'm restoring their pasture to their liking.) Today I picked up all of the stakes that I had left around the field and took out the solar electric fence charger. I also dug up three of the four sides of buried chicken wire. Not my favorite activity. Tomorrow I'll attack the fourth side and dig up the perennial, native plants from the flower garden to bring with me to my new home!

There’s so much to do, but we’re getting it done! Here’s what I’ve been able to cross off my to-do list so far:

1. Take down the electric fence
2. Remove the anti-deer sticks from the wire fence
3. Remove the z-clips connecting the wire fence to the T-posts
4. Unravel the wire thread connecting the buried chicken wire to the wire fence
5. Take down wire fence and roll fence into spools
6. Pull out T-posts
7. Remove row-cover and metal hoops
9. Remove remaining irrigation
10. Take down flower support netting and posts
11. Take down tomato trellises and posts
12. Remove rubber pavers (used to hold down row covers) from the field
13. Probably ten other things I can’t remember right now.

There’s still so much to do, but we’re getting there! The goal is to move the horses onto the field Monday so they can enjoy grazing the green grass before it dies this winter. 🙂

HAPPY LAST DAY OF CSA SEASON! The final shares were delivered to the Healing Approach this morning, marking the end of a wonderful twenty weeks. I took the nicest nap when I got home (did you know you sleep better when you're not worrying about groundhogs?) and then started the process of slowly dismantling the field to prepare it for horses this winter. Before I did so, I took a moment to stand and reflect on everything that's happened on that land over the past three seasons. I got a little emotional, to say the least! I am happy and satisfied with how this season went. Thank you all for following along! Instead of my usual post-farming-season social media break, I'll continue posting for a little while so you can watch the space turn back into a horse pasture. Happy Halloween, everyone, and thank you for a great season!

The last shares for the Monday/Tuesday pickups are ready to head out this evening! They contain cabbage, bok choy, chard or kale, carrots or green onions, potatoes, winter squash, radishes, a decorative gourd, and choice of two herbs. It’s amazing what holds on through a few frosts to see the end of October! 🎃

Before and after! I am so amazed at the resilience of cold-hardy crops like this kale. The first photo was taken at 9:14am, the second at 11:31am. Looking at the first photo, you might think the kale was done for, but it shakes the frost right off and keeps going! This is because the kale puts extra sugars in its leaves when it gets cold to act as a natural antifreeze. This is also why kale in the early spring and late fall tastes the sweetest! 😋

With only one week of CSA season left, it's time to publicly announce that this season has been the farm's last. While this news is sad, it is for a happy reason! I'm getting married! 😍 (And moving.) Although my intention was to run the farm for at least five years, life had a way of changing my plans in the best way. While I will miss growing fresh, local food in this community, I am looking forward to my next chapter of life!

I want to thank everyone who has been part of the farm's journey, whether you were a CSA member, Facebook follower, market-goer, or friendly supporter! Whether you have been here for years or just this summer, thank you for allowing me to live one of my childhood dreams of being a farmer. The past three years have been full of growth for the plants and myself! I remember missing my grad school graduation to move compost onto the field as I prepared for the first season. If I could give my past self advice, I would tell her to plant three times more than the calculations suggest (one for the bugs, one for the groundhogs, and one for the humans) and to not get paralyzed by not knowing which decision is best. When there is only so much time in a growing season (and in life!), sometimes the best thing to do is act. Everything that happens after can be figured out as it comes.

I still have a few more days of harvesting, but I'm already starting to tidy up the field and get it ready for our horses to move back onto. They're going to love being in this pasture again! I've also rehomed several of our chickens to a few other wonderful homes in the area, including Renegade Acres! If you find yourself craving the hens' eggs, you can now find them at their market booth. ;) I've also pulled many perennials and seeds from the field to carry with me to my next home. I will miss this farm, but bringing some of the plants who lived the seasons along with me is comforting.

Thank you again for a wonderful three years on the farm. ❤️

Today was the last delivery to Trinity Health Brighton! I have loved meeting the wonderful crowd of people who pick-up there this season. I also uprooted a few perennial herbs from the field to bring inside this winter. It was a gorgeous day!

The last shares were delivered to The Torch this morning! They included michihili cabbage, kale, apples, tomatoes, bok choy, chives, parsley, jalapeños, cayennes, acorn squash, and delicata squash. Yum! 😋 Thank you to everyone who contributed to Torch shares and thanks to The Torch for allowing the farm to partner with them! It’s been wonderful bringing food there this season! (Again, shoutout to Renegade Acres for the squash!)

It’s the last share of the season for Monday/Tuesday pickup for half of my biweekly peeps! (There is still next week for the weekly and other biweekly pickups!) I hope everyone enjoys their last share with arugula, michihili cabbage, bok choy, chard, tomatoes, peppers, dill, chives, beets, radishes, apples, and winter squash. (Shoutout to Renegade Acres for the winter squash!) I wish the final pickup for Tuesday had had less lightning and thunder so we didn’t have to say a frantic farewell while dodging raindrops, but I appreciate every single one of you and wish you the coziest of winters! 🥰

Pulled in the final few apples clinging to the trees! There should be enough for everyone to have a final few next week. Apple pancakes, anyone? 🍎 🥞 I wish I had been paying better attention to where I was putting my hands, though, because I reached for an apple with a wasp on it and got stung on the palm! If you see me walking around with a balloon hand for a few days, that’s why. 🐝

We found a hidden Mickey on the field! All of the remaining peppers and tomatoes that survived the first two frosts were brought in before the third one hit us earlier this week. The cold-hardy crops, like the greens, beets, and radishes, are still doing great on the field! I made one of my favorite dishes as well, combining golden delicious squash, peppers, and tomatoes into a rich sauce that goes great over gnocchi. (recipe included on the photo of gnocchi!)
