When the bees pick their own campground…

Got a call about an RV that suddenly had a few “extra guests.” A honey bee swarm had decided the electrical cable through hole and compartment was the perfect campground!

Swarms like this are one of the most fascinating parts of a honey bee colony’s life. Contrary to what many people think, they’re usually at their gentlest. These bees aren’t defending honey or brood—they’re simply looking for a new place to call home after leaving their original hive with their queen.

With a little persuasion I was able to get them out of the RV before they established a hive.
Acting quickly to rehome them before they get fully moved in is very important!

Every swarm rescued is another healthy colony given a second chance—and one less colony lost to extermination.

If you ever find a swarm like this, don’t panic. Keep your distance, avoid spraying them, and call a local beekeeper. Most of us are happy to give these incredible pollinators a new home. 🐝💛

As our 2026 honey flow starts to slow we’re looking forward to sharing the flavors that are unique to our region and season!

An old tradition says you should “tell the bees” when their keeper has passed. These hives came to me from a beekeeper I never had the chance to meet. Still, I don’t consider them as something inherited, but as something entrusted—the stewardship of work and care through seasons we unknowingly shared. And for the bees an opportunity to continue their own diligent course from season to season.

Trees are the most significant food source for bees. Silver Maple blooms like this are one of the first significant food sources (pollen) that the bees will collect to grow their hive.

Making beeswax candles is an easy craft and we love repurposing treasured glassware into candles and giving them a new life.
