🐔While it may seem easy to compare our chicken to supermarket chicken, we’ve discussed the distinct differences in previous posts. These differences also show up in prices due to significant feed cost difference when using proper quality rations and intensive labor costs involved with humanely raising livestock. These practices directly impact the quality of our products, as many egg-buying customers can attest to.

We completely understand the desire to buy .99 eggs and the chicken for $2.99/lb in local grocery markets. After all, we are consumers as well and dollars are most definitely tight these days. We don’t shame anyone for the choices they need to make for themselves or family. We just hope that you understand what we do is different and based on quality, not price point efficiency and quantity. That most definitely doesn’t mean just to randomly pay more. There are informative reports from the USDA that break down pricing and national averages. This way you have a better understanding of costs, rather than comparing our products to something that is simply not comparable. Check out the most recent National Pasture Raised Poultry report from the USDA website.

🙌We are proud that we raise Non-GMO and Soy-Free chicken and offer it cheaper than the national averages. 💪

Lately there is A LOT of confusion about meat production and farming. Rightfully so, as the powers-that-be would love to keep you confused thinking you are buying something your grandparents raised/ate versus something grown in large indoor facilities under more factory-like settings. This is where all the fun terms come into play: cage free, free range, pasture raised, and many more. Although slightly monotonous and vague, there is actually a difference. We're not going to speak on practices we don’t use, we can only speak about how we do things on our farm.

We pasture raise on our farm, meaning our birds spend their entire life outside under the sun on green pasture. These birds are moved daily to protect the pasture that fuels them. This is to prevent over grazing of ground covers and important insects that make our pastures so healthy. Because of the environment and how we raise our birds there is a distinct difference between our chicken (pasture raised) and conventionally raised grocery store chicken (indoor facilities). It starts with our supplemental feed that is a non-gmo soy-free feed. We have soy allergies in our home that forces us to be extra cautious with what we put in our bodies. High quality feed on fertile green pasture produces a superior quality product that is first noticed in texture. Pasture raised chicken is praised for its texture and flavor.

Obviously next is the flavor profile, a much more distinctive and flavorful taste. I understand that these are subjective topics so we will get into the science. Pasture raised chicken has higher levels of Omega 3 fatty acids and monosaturated fat than its counterpart of conventionally raised chicken. This means the lower ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 in pasture meats mimics healthy ratio and proportions of these fatty acids that professionals recommend. If that wasn’t enough, pasture raised chicken has 21% less fat and 30% less saturated fat then conventionally raised chicken, while having higher good fat and less bad fat.

All of this before we mention that pasture raised chicken is higher in vitamin A, D, and E. So, as you can easily see, pasture raised chicken is nutritionally superior with higher vitamins and a better fatty acid profile.

We would be glad to talk about the humane treatment and ethics involved between pasture raised and conventionally raised chicken, I just don’t think social media is ready for that conversation. So stop by the farm and ask any questions you may have regarding how we raise our birds and why it’s different.

Once you understand, you’ll see why it’s an insult to us to compare our chicken to something you’d find in your local supermarket. We take what we produce and put in our bodies seriously. How it is produced matters when you’re looking for the best and most nutritious foods.

Coming to you THIS Saturday!

Mark your calendars, save the morning for the meadow!

🍅 TOMATO TASTING IS THIS SATURDAY! 🍅

One of our favorite days of the year is almost here! Join us at Howe Meadow for the Annual Tomato Tasting Festival—a morning celebrating local growers, incredible food, and, of course, a whole lot of tomatoes.

🍅 THE TASTING
Taste your way through 35+ varieties of locally grown tomatoes, discover your favorites, and see how your picks compare with the picks of our panel of Northeast Ohio culinary pros. Winners will be announced at 11am!

👨‍🍳 THE CHEFS
We have one heck of a panel joining us this year:

🍅 Vinnie Cimino of Cordelia + ROSY
🍅 Douglas Katz of Zhug, Amba, Provenance + Kiln
🍅 Jeremy Umansky of Larder Delicatessen & Bakery
🍅 Liu Fang of Abundance Culinary — joining us for the first time!

Plus, Jeremy Umansky will demonstrate how to ferment tomatoes, and Chef Jake McDaniel of Masu will show us the many ways to cut one 🔪🍅

🥐 AROUND THE MARKET
Our vendors are getting in on the tomato fun, too. Look for tomato danishes + focaccia, Bloody Mary pops, tomato lemonade (we see you, TikTok 👀), green tomato jelly and more—plus live music and kid-friendly fun throughout the morning.

👕 AND ABOUT THAT TOMATO…
Can we have a moment for this year's artwork?! 🤯

Local artist Garth Phillips of Cleveland Print Co. poured so much time, creativity, and wonderfully weird tomato energy into creating this custom design for us—and he absolutely outdid himself.

We'll have limited-edition Tomato Tasting tees featuring Garth's artwork available Saturday, along with more fun tomato merch. You are NOT going to want to miss these 🍅🔥

📍 HOWE MEADOW
📅 Saturday, August 22
⏰ 9am–12pm
🎟️ FREE + open to everyone | $5 suggested donation

The Tomato Tasting happens alongside our regularly scheduled farmers market, so come hungry, come curious, and come ready to have some very strong opinions about tomatoes 🍅

It’s all about community 💪

And yesterday was chock full of it —

🍯Had a wonderful meet up with Wes at Akron Honey to get some more details down for the market that will be happening September 13th! So excited to see this come to fruition. 🤩

🍅Made a stop to get more items ready for the Annual Tomato Tasting Festival on August 22nd!

🚙Stopped by Vandevere in Akron for their Customer Appreciation Event — and wow do they put it on! Of course, had to say hello to Becky and Rich. 🙂 Thank you for being such a vital part of the community! 👏
