Happy November 1st, everyone.

We’re packing the last two bins of apples this morning and will close for the season when they are sold (2-3 more days). Hope to see you beforehand and grab some broccoli — we’re still picking every morning.

Thinning apples is one of our big early season jobs. Apples grow in clusters and by knocking most of the fruit to the ground 😮 the size of the remaining fruit increases. Thinning apples also prevents limbs of trees from growing too heavy and breaking.

We have some beautiful macouns, macs, fortunes and cortlands at the farm stand.

One month left! We’ll close for the season in mid November (or earlier if we sell out of apples).

A little infotainment about this year’s apple crop; we picked about 30% less apples than in a normal year due to fire blight which is a disease that causes the branches of the trees to look like they’ve been scorched by fire. Apple trees are susceptible to fire blight in years when May is cool and the blossoms stay open on the trees for longer than normal. Bees are not as active in cool weather and it’s the process of being pollinated that signals the flower to fall.

This is farming and we’ll cut off the dead branches, dig out the dead trees, and plant more in the Spring. 🌳 🍎

Enjoy them for a few weeks before carving, or, if you’re like Mrs. Ferjulian, make a big mess on the porch harvesting the seeds to roast and save for winter

The 2022 flower cutting garden has given us all that it has for the season and is closed to walk ons beginning Tuesday, October 11. (Subscribers, your last day of picking is October 15).

A sincere thank you to everyone who came out this summer and picked a jar of flowers. We hope that picking and arranging flowers brings you as much joy as growing the garden brings our family. It’s truly one of our favorite projects.

Time to get the field cleaned up and 200,000 tulips bulbs planted. Spring is just around the corner 🌷

The farm atop Gospel Hill was an apple orchard long before our family arrived, five generations ago, in 1941. It’s been 81 years and we’ve never missed a season of growing this classic New England fruit!

Come share in the bounty. Open Friday & Saturday 9am-6pm; Sunday 12pm-6pm.

One Fall when I was about nine, my Grandmother Thorpe gave me a bag of bulbs and said, “You go out and plant them.” I felt more than a little trepidation—I had never planted anything without her supervision—but she reassured me, “You can do it. You won’t go wrong!” Her generosity could have been ruinous to her flower border, but I got the bulbs planted with no mishaps. The next Spring, when they bloomed, I almost burst with pride when she told all her friends, “David did that!” From that moment I knew I was a gardener, and after all these years it remains the core of how I define myself. -David Culp, The Layered Garden

*October is tulip bulb planting month and we are selling bulb bags of our favorite varieties.

Vintage apple harvesting bags.

The straps have been changed a few times but our method of picking is the same as it was in the 1940s. Apples are picked into the bag and when full the ropes holding the bottom cloth are released to gently drop apples in the bin. Full bins are stored in the apple cooler, underneath the barn (we wish we could bottle up that smell for you) and brought down to the farm stand as needed. Refrigerating apples is super important to keeping them firm.

We love when customers stop to tell us that their first job was picking apples on this farm a gazillion years ago.

Flower picking is still open until October 15 or the first frost, whichever comes sooner.

Tea cup arrangements! Submit your arrangement in the tea cup of your choosing by Sunday at 7pm. Bonus points if you name your arrangement.

(This one was done today by Natalie in her mom Erin’s tea cup. A sprig of Rosemary was coiled around the base of the cup to help hold stems in place).
