Saturday as I was raking the last of our first cutting, this "hay tornado" happened. It took a small square bale worth of hay!
Herman is doing well. Gaining everyday. Baby steps, but gaining.
Sunday evening cow check. All calm on the cow front tonight. Sweet dreams everyone. 💤💤
Cows are on turnips. They do end up eating the bulbs as can be seen in the video where they have cleaned the field up very well.
Today we brought the cows and calves from rented pasture home. The landlord had a great view to get this video for us! 3.5 hours and 6 loads we got all 43 pairs home. *Jim watched from the sidelines.
Friday night zoomies—bovine style!
How do we tag calves? We tag them in the field just like they are born. Most of the time tagging can be accomplished by 1 person. Some cows require 2 people. We also appreciate being able to slip the calf under the polywire to tag it away from the mother.
The sky cleared enough this morning for us to help out this first calf heifer. She was gaining but was getting tired, so Jim stepped in. Everyone is doing great! We are over half way through calving!
Cows are happy to be out on pasture.
This cow was tired enough from calving she didn't want to stand as long as he wanted to nurse. So Jim assisted him in nursing while they both laid down. Jim has never witnessed this in all his years. *The cow was not in a head gate during this. She was just chilling as he nursed even with us close‐ she was such a doll through it all.
Here's a video of a cow giving birth. Enjoy!
The heifers didn't want to stay in this morning. Becky and Paige got them taken care of. Cindy and Mandy had a talking to themthus afternoon. (In case you can't view the other video, we're trying to figure out this technology 😃)
They have arrived all in great time with their appetites.
Sunday before church moving the cows and calves to new pasture. Just a brisk jaunt down the road to greener pasture.
A glimpse of spring here at the farm!
You have heard the saying “Make hay while the sun shines” Well Jim is taking advantage of the sunny weather to get hay made as the rain has put us way behind this year. 110 acres of first cutting to get done yet. Enjoy the sunshine and stay cool as you can this weekend!!
Beef cattle can be big babies even if you don't bottle feed. :)
