Bluebird Hill Homestead

Bluebird Hill Homestead Cultivate the Connection www.bluebirdhillhomestead.com Bluebird Hill Homestead is the expression of every seed we have gathered along our journey so far.

Our mission is creating opportunities for people to experience a deep connection with the land, themselves, and their community. This is not simply learning ABOUT nature, farming, or sustainable living. We are providing an intimate hands-on experience, creating lasting connections through direct sensory immersion and intentional mentoring. Since becoming the stewards of this magical place in 2012,

we have launched our kids classes and summer camps, hosted several community gatherings…AND…we moved here June of 2013 and lived outside all summer. We even survived 3 off-grid winters here living in a sweet little school bus while we built our home! Over the next several years, we plan to build a fully integrated homestead and micro-farm, with a natural built home for our family, an outdoor covered classroom, permaculture gardens, and small-scale livestock. A large portion of the land will be preserved and stewarded as wild space and habitat for local wildlife. As these pieces come together, we hope to be a beloved resource for the community. We look forward to seeing you on the land soon! Check out the scoop on our website: www.bluebirdhillhomestead.com

Also, as we are getting our almost 3000 seedlings set up for tomorrow morning, I just want to share vulnerably that some of our favorite plants did not make it this year. There is always some loss each season (that doesn’t get pictured here), but when all of our spilanthes died, and almost every tulsi…it was heartbreaking. Yes, there were tears.

There were several panicked phone calls to my mom (a Master Gardener) and many efforts to remedy the decline, but sadly, they were too far gone before I realized what was happening.

I have a long list of potential things I did wrong and what to do differently next year…with temperature, water, soil etc. But at the end of the day, not every seed we plant germinates into its potential, and not every delicate sprout we tend will fully take root.

So I’m bravely sharing a few photos of the failures that are always happening behind the scenes, so you can share my grief.

I did start some new seeds of each, but they are way too tiny to sell this weekend. I’m so sorry!

Thankfully, we’ve got several other healthy plants that will be ready for you in the morning. Looking forward to seeing many of you here. The gates open at 11am!

A Passion(flower) Project.

I love the plants you can propagate right from cuttings! Especially when germination from seeds can be finicky.

I’m excited to see if these take root, and that tea was exactly what I needed!

Also…I have a hoop house! I feel like a real farmer now! 😆

I found it on Craigslist about a year ago, but my cancer diagnosis put a damper on getting it set up fully last spring.

But thanks to many wonderful people, including my family, several teenagers, and some very skilled and generous Earth Warriors families…it is up, secured, and *most* of the seedlings are transplanted!

I’ve learned very quickly that it requires quite a bit of babysitting. I’m still afraid I’ll do something silly like leave the house on a cloudy day to run an errand, only to return to the sun popped out and scorching the wilting plants. Working out the kinks still, I guess.

But I’m so thankful to have this added space! If I can keep them all alive, it’s all the more plant medicine for you to take home from our sale in a few weeks!

(May 23/24 11am-4pm) More details soon!

I was awake early and remembered the frost warning so decided to make a dawn check on the plant babies. They made it! Two more nights of freezing temps here so hopefully my new but minimal infrastructure holds and keeps everything alive. 🌱

We haven’t made Seed Bombs in ages and we have this open area where I’m hoping the kids can frolic barefoot through the wildflowers this summer, so…

This became our Earth Day project for last week.

Our recipe:
5 parts clay (sifted from our clay pit)
3 parts compost
1 part wildflower seeds local to our area

Mix well, add a titch of water slowly until the consistency of cookie batter. Roll into balls about 1” diameter. Allow to dry in the sun for a bit, then toss wildly!

The kids were especially excited for the idea of being “Ninja Gardeners” and they each took several with them to possibly toss out their car windows or plant at home.

The sublime beauty of the glowing greenhouse has been bringing me such joy in the evenings.

One of the Earth Warriors asked me earnestly the other day, “Why do you call it a greenhouse when it’s blue?”

So I’ve started calling it the bluegreenhouse. ❤️

We have 2 rare openings in our Friday group of Earth Warriors Nature Club starting this week. Do you know any homeschoolers who would love to join us?

This photo captures one of the kids’ favorite games…Fire Keeper. The blindfolded “fire keeper” guards a bell (aka fire) in the middle of the circle, while the other kids take turns quietly trying to steal the bell and return to the outer circle without being pointed at by their blindfolded friend.

A game of stalking and concentration.

We play this and dozens of other nature connection games, varied from week to week. As well as so many other fun activities…fire building, cooking over the fire, gardening, herbalism, fort building, art, storytelling and more!

Please help spread the word!

The 10-week Fall Session starts this week. We meet from 10-3, a drop-off for ages 5+. Tuition is $600/child with a 10% sibling discount. I’m happy to answer any questions. Feel free to reach out!
