Sheepish Handspun

Sheepish Handspun Beautiful hand spun yarns from fleece purchased iocally. I make beautiful handspun yarns for knitters who want "the real thing".

i prepare raw fleece, washing and carding it, and often blending it with dyed fleece to produce lovely colors. I use a drum carder to blend different fibers, like silk, soy silk, bamboo or alpaca fiber with wool. My yarns reflect the joy and respect I have for sheep and the people who care for them. I try to use fleece from sheep I have met, and who live in New England. The adventure of making yarn in the time-honored way includes visiting farms and buying great fleece for your knitted handwork

Finally spun and plyed: a new skein of delicious, soft Romney/Cormo yarn! The wool is from Sheep #121, Consolati Farms, Lee, MA.
TOP: Tying all 4 sides on my niddy-noddy to secure the skein. I will be dyeing this skein, so I use plastic strips cut from a used plastic food storage bag. This assures me that dye will have access to all of the wool.
LEFT: Tying is done, and I am happy with this big skein.
RIGHT: REALLY happy with this skein! It is ready for the hot soak to set twist; then comes the dyeing.

The skein on the left is new - measured, weighed and tagged this morning. It is the same yardage as the skein on the right. That one is a week old. Only difference is that the new skein is half and ounce lighter. . Both are DK weight, 192 yards of beautiful Manx Loaghtan wool imported from the Isle of Man. Manx Loaghtan means “mouse brown”.

Left: That’s what the tied skein looks like as it literally “jumps” off the skeiner (niddy-noddy). It’s something of a surprise as I loosen the k**b that keeps the skeiner fully extended.
Right: The skein has the extra twist that I like, and looks pretty good!

I’ve been quiet - but busy. The top skein - Romney/Cormo - is ready to dye (tomorrow), and the bottom skein is hanging to dry after skeining on my old-fashioned niddy-noddy.
The brown yarn is natural Manx Loaghtan wool, imported from the Isle of Man; that is where the amazing sheep live. Every single sheep produces the same color brown wool - incredibly strong and soft. Think of a whole flock that looks like the sheep below!
