Before people had tiny objects hanging from their phones, they pinned them directly to their clothes.
Ancient brooches were actually useful. They held clothing together. Eventually we figured out buttons and zippers, but instead of abandoning the brooch, we did what humans do best.
We made it less useful and more fun.
By the Victorian era, brooches had become a kind of language. Flowers could signal affection, portraits kept someone close, and mourning brooches held the hair or image of someone you’d lost.
Then costume jewelry came along and suddenly we had new materials, new colors, Bakelite, and considerably fewer reasons to exercise restraint.
Which brings us here.
Horses. Dogs. Flowers. Ice cream sundaes. And, for reasons lost to history, an owl.
Nobody asked for any of this but someone made it anyway.
We miss that kind of thinking.
