Think about the last time you ate a burger. Maybe it was ground beef you bought at the farmerโs market. Maybe it was an elk burger from that shoulder season cow hunt or venison from a deer you shot with your dad. Perhaps you have that animalโs skull mounted on your wall or a picture of it on you...

On this day 143 years ago, a man by the name of Samuel P. Perkins purchased the foundation of our farm and started farming (the same year Edison invented the lightbulb!). ๐ก๐ก
Today, our farm consists of Jersey, Holstein and crossbred dairy cows, dairy heifers, crossbred beef animals, Berkshire hogs, Dorper/Katahadin ewes, lambs, and chickens. Our farm ground is over 90% hay and pasture ground. We are so thankful for the past 143 years of growth, and hope it continues for many generations to come.

Most of our cows are A2/A2
I often hear: Iโm lactose intolerant so I canโt have any dairy.
I am always SO shocked to see how many people donโt know about the various lactose free/low lactose options that are still REAL, nutritious dairy products!
For example, the A2 milk you see in this picture. In a glass of REAL dairy there are two forms of protein called casein and whey. The casein is what creates the difference between regular milk and A2 milk. There are two forms of casein in cowโs milk: A1 and A2 beta-casein. There have been studies that say the A1 beta-casein is harder to digest for SOME people. So if regular milk bothers you, this might be good for you to try! In order to have cowโs that only produce A2 milk, you have to breed for it. The breeds that have a higher percentage of A2 genes are Jersey, Guernsey, and Brown Swiss. Holsteins and other breeds can have the A2 genes as well! But, to have A2 milk, the cows can only have the A2 genes, not A1.

While there have not been enough studies to say A2 milk is superior to regular milk when it comes to those who have discomfort after drinking regular milk, it has shown to help. There is nothing different nutritionally about the milk, just that it is easier to digest for some!
Other options lactose intolerant people can enjoy:
-Hard cheese such as Swiss, parm, and cheddar are VERY low in lactose.
-Many brands now make Lactose free milk! I personally enjoy fairlifes version of that.
-low-lactose butter!
-kefir and probiotic yogurt. The live bacteria (good bacteria of course!) in both of these break down the lactose!
So the next time your friend or family tells you they canโt have dairy products because they are lactose intolerant, you can educate them on these amazing dairy products they can still enjoy while getting all of that great nutritional value that REAL dairy has to offer!

Our berkshire pigs have been moved to their winter housing area since we are out of grass on the pastures. If you are interested in meat from our grass-fed or pasture raised animals check out our new website at countrymeadowsfarmmkt.com.
Our chicks are in and will be out on grass in another week when it is warmer. They grow fast and will be ready for processing on June 9th. We expect to sell out of them this year due to the shortage of meat in the stores. If you would to reserve some chicken for your family, please contact us.

For those who are interested, we still have hams available from our pastured Berkshire pork for your Easter dinner. We also have grass fed lamb available too but it is limited in supply.
Planting trees today on the farm, Norway spruce trees for windbreaks, Chinkapin oaks for deer and squirrels, sugar maples, and American mountain ash for the birds.
Saw our first bluebird of the season today. Bluebirds enjoy eating insects both the good and the bad bugs.
Today was a beautiful day to clean out the old nests from last year out of our existing bluebird houses around the farm. We have several bluebird houses to attract them to our pastures and meadows. They help build a diverse and nature friendly ecosystem and are just one of the ways we are working with nature instead of against her.
Twin lambs born today, this one is in the house as the ewe hasnโt accepted it yet. Kateโs on lamb duty.
