2yrs 🤯

It has been two years since we moved our ranch from Hawaii to Missouri. An important but hard change. Since then we have grown from 2 Gypsy horses to 6, from 2 bulls to 6, from 7 cows to 13. We are grateful for all the connections this move has allowed us to make.

Here's to another couple years!

When do you wean?

My answer always seems a little crazy. "Anywhere between 3-6months old"

Why such a wide range?

Sometimes calves are little milky angels. They can nurse forever without causing any stress or damage to my cow's udder. These perfect little hoofed fairies get to nurse for 6 months. This gives them the best foundation for being future milk cows and leaves me with hardy heifers that handle winter like they are Russian.

But then there are the calves *cough Honeycomb* that are udder barbarians. These milk pirates leave cuts on my cow's teats like a cheese grater no matter how I supplement them. My top priority is always a healthy cow. So when we get calves that start damaging our cows udder and risking things like mastitis and udder injuries- they get the "if you're old enough to be that rough then you're old enough to do without" treatment and are weaned at 3 months. This still gives them a nice foundation for their future and they are old enough at 3 months to graze well enough to feed themselves. Sometimes our smaller calves weaned at this age need a little supplemental grain to aid in their growth - and sometimes they are just fine without.

Our goal is always to dam raise as close to 6 months as we can safely without risk to momma and we let each calf cow pair tell us where that line is. Shirley was a little milk angel and nursed till she was 7 months old. Slipper and Honeycomb however are little nursing hobgoblins and have had their last milky meal from Cinder at 3 months 2 weeks old. 🤣

HCC Noah is a beautiful bull! Very tiny and stays THICK on air. Two traits I'm very excited to see paired with a few of our girls this year 🙌🏻 both his parents fully matured under 38" and have great grass fed abilities. At two years old Noah is barely 37" and has a great temperament. He is respectful of my personal space and so gentle with the cows. ❤️ He collected fantastically and I can't wait to see his calves in the spring!

What a 7 days it's been!!

We welcomed Iris to the farm, and while totally unplanned (I wasn't adding any animals to the farm this year) she already fits in so well. ❤️ Iris is due in September and I can't wait to see this calf! Iris is beautifully built, tiny, teats made for hand milking, an incredible disposition, and we've been told she's a great producer too - what more can you ask for in a family milk cow?!

We also welcomed our newest milk maid and cowgirl to the farm. ❤️ A blessing that has been years and years in the making/waiting.

With the addition of Nikki we will be a little more sporadic with our social media posts - I don't intend to miss this hard earned baby one bit! But don't worry! I am still helping with semen orders and still happy to help you pick the right bull for your breeding season - there just might be some new noise in the background and I may ask to call you back if things are crazy. ❤️

Happy Father's Day!

Never underestimate the influence of a bull on your herd's future.

Whatever bull you choose to use will affect your herd for generations. Their temperament, build, and genetic background will shape your herd for better or worse. ❤️ So always choose the best bull that you can afford. One that compliments your cows the very best and helps the next generation be one step closer to your goals.

There is no perfect bull - but there are bulls that are perfect for your cow/program/farm. This is why I raise a variety of lovely bulls with different strengths and focuses. Jellybean's first milking as a second freshener went off without a hitch! 🙌🏻 No kicking, no drama, no holding back milk. Just easy chill vibes, some stand treats, and a pail of milk. ❤️ LOVE this girl and her large teats, large orfices, and easy disposition.

Now - we do calf share, which means she's with her baby all day and we are just taking any excess she needs removed to stay comfortable. ❤️ Today that as a gallon of milk that the dogs were very grateful for. The milk still has colostrum in it so we aren't drinking it yet, which is why we are hand milking into a pail with any filters or covers. ❤️ The dogs don't care if a little hair or dirt gets into their milk. Lol

She's here!!

Born day 276, 20lbs, 20", and full of life. 😍 Jellybean had another textbook delivery and in no time had her calf cleaned and nursing and afterbirth delivered. ❤️ which meant we had everyone all tucked in, calcium bolus given, umbilical cord dipped, alfalfa and some grain fed, and everyone in bed before 11pm 🙌🏻 Always grateful for those smooth deliveries, but especially with me being due in 2 weeks myself. This is our last calf till August and a great way to end the first round of calving. ❤️

Magni and Jellybean produced the most perfect bull calf last year (our boy Candyman) I just knew we had to repeat that breeding. ❤️ This little heifer did not disappoint and I know her family is gonna LOVE her!

This is why we halter train ALL our heifers. Because when it's 62⁰, rainy, and you've got a cow that needs milking - you don't need no rodeo. You want to be able to walk right up to your girl, slip a halter on, and get her the 1/4mile back up the hill to the milking barn with zero drama - and you want your 8yr old to be able to safely do that too.

That doesn't happen overnight, it's not pure luck to get a cow that lets you lead and halter them. It is consistent handling, intentional actions, and proper training. ❤️ Early introduction and foundation makes all the difference.
