The current laying hens have been moved next to the new batch of laying hens. This is an effort to help them get use to each other before they all get moved into the barn for the winter. They all are in the front field that is full of clover, alfalfa and orchard grass.

Another batch of chicks have arrived on the farm this week and are transitioning nicely. The grow out rabbits are gaining well and enjoy all the fresh grass and fresh clover and alfalfa we pick for them. They are rotated in the yard 2-3xs a day.

The new garden boxes are working well and even though I got things planted late everything seems to be growing appropriately. I’m excited for the melons and pumpkins. We did lose a bed of green beans to Mabel who thought digging in the bed was fun. 😡 Once the picket fence is completely up this won’t be an issue. Silly pup.

Chicken gizzards!

Once cleaned put in instant pot with 1 cup water per pound. Add salt, pepper, onion, bay leaves. PC 25 mins. high pressure. Once done you can eat or I prefer mine fried.

If frying put about 1/2” of oil of choice in 12” cast iron skillet. Dip in egg then toss in a choice of flour, bread crumbs, crackers, etc. and place in hot oil. Just brown them! They are already cooked! I salt and pepper them once they are out of the oil and on a plate. Enjoy!!

Here is the shrink wrap process for the birds. The straw out the top of the bag allows air to escape as it shrinks. It is then removed and the tie is tightened down. The bird is then ready for the freezer.

Freedoms Rangers have rested and are now in the freezer. Here are our stats. We bought 25 chicks. Lost 2 as chicks and had one we quarantined as grown chicken for unknown leg injury. So that left us with 22 chickens.

All fed a soy free, non GMO, organic feed and were in a chicken tractor that was moved twice daily around the farm.

Max weight: 5.13 pounds
Smallest weight: 3.09 pounds
Average weight: 4.06 pounds
Total weight of all chickens: 90.05 pounds

All the flowers and herbs are just gorgeous.

It’s fun on the farm watching things grow. The Freedom Rangers are ready for processing this week! Years ago we grew Cornish Crosses for meat birds. I was so very disgusted with them that I said I would not grow meat birds again.

I absolutely love these Freedom Rangers. They are a heritage meat bird and forage and graze just like our laying hens. No more setting in their own excrement because their legs were not strong enough to hold their weight. They are such a better fit for our farm.

The grow out rabbits are happy and plump, grazing the yard. Plenty of clover, plantain, dandelion, and comfrey to keep them healthy and growing.

Fruit trees trimmed. Giving the cousins a job of picking up all the twigs. Uncle Dan has allllll the help today. 😂 Some of the smaller branches are bundled and fed to the rabbits. Soon the rabbits along with the chickens will be back out and rotated on the yard and field.

Tonight I was attempting to “mom” my children. They quickly reminded me that they know how to do this. It was such a joy to sit back, snap pictures and watch them work! They have a routine! They all are good on the tractor and know how to start the sap pump, how to clean and put it all away! They are such a joy! #maplesyrupseason #dutchridgefarms2021

Fresh bagged leaves today! The hens are happily scratching through the leaves finding bugs. This will give them something to do since they won’t venture out of the coup. This also makes for some great compost this spring! Happy hens, yummy eggs!
