2026 grazing has begun!! This post is for all our fellow nerds out there! This is what 26,000 lbs per acre looks like when you're talking about livestock stocking rate. In the spring, the pastures are growing really fast and the forage is higher in protein content than through the summer. We move the cows quickly across each paddock because grazing too close to the ground now would set the grass back all year. There is roughly 350 lbs of dry matter per inch of grass, so we guage how much area they need based on how tall the grass is. In the summer,, the forage is taller, so we cinch them down to 100,000 to 250,000 lbs per acre by making the pieces smaller and moving them more times a day to prevent them from cherry-picking their favorite forage and leaving stuff they don't love. You can see the difference in the pic where the cows just moved into a new piece, and that they grazed the piece they left just a bit too low. So we made adjustments! If you made it this far, thank you! There's a lot to managing an adaptive multi-paddock grazing system and we learn every day!

Oh my! Is that SOURDOUGH?!?!

Yes!! Horn O Plenty, owned by my friends Jeff and Mandi Horn in Bedford County, are going to start delivering sourdough breads to the Farm Store tomorrow!! We'll have 4 different kinds, whole and half loaves! So come check it out and let us know what you think!!

We're thinkin it's gonna be a hit!!

The best Christmas present a conservationist farmer could get.....a bale unroller!!
This tool will help us spread organic matter and nutrients on areas of our pasture that need it! These efforts build more soil, improve soil health, increase yields, allow more water to percolate into the ground, and improve the quality of the grass our cows eat!
Sure beats our old way of unrolling a bale....aim it downhill, cut the strings, and start praying it unrolled before it took out the fence!!

I know...those aren't cows!!
I wanted to talk about one of our many projects here on the farm! We're removing invasive plants and replacing them with native species like oaks, paw paws, persimmons, hazelnuts, and fruit bearing shrubs to strengthen the food chain!! In a few short years, this place will be bursting with blooms, bugs, and birds!! A healthy farm means EVERYTHING is healthy! It takes a lot of persistence, but we believe in what we do!!

We stocked the farm store this morning with our delicious pork! Bacon, ham, pork chops, three kinds of sausage, and much more!
We restocked some of our grassfed beef, as well! Open 7 am to 7 pm daily!

It's called a Widow Skimmer and it's the coolest thing I saw all day!!
Bob was unloading a load of round bales at D&G's and this critter stopped by to check us out! Dragonflies eat mosquitoes, so we're happy to have her here! D&G take special care of their land and it shows!! We're so fortunate to be a part of their plan!
