As much fun as we had during our trip, one of the highlights was spending some time with David Finlayson. David’s family has its roots firmly established in the South African wine industry. Born into the wine industry, David is carrying the torch that was lit years ago by his father, Walter, who was one of the driving forces of bringing South Africa into its modern wine era.
Kicking up some dirt with winemaker Peter van der Merve and David at the Edgebaston Estate vineyards in Stellenbosch. Here we are having a look around and getting a feel for the lay of the land and the dirt that produces such beautiful wines.
What we noticed quite a bit on our ventures in and around Stellenbosch proper was how much urban growth has started to encroach on vineyard land and expand since our last visit a number of years back. But then who can blame anyone for not wanting to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Being a food and wine destination Stellenbosch is a must visit for any food and wine aficionado. Here we are out to dinner in downtown Stellenbosch with David as he pours a bottle of the award winning1980 Blaauwklippen Cabernet Sauvignon that was made by his father. This particular wine won David’s father the Winemaker of the Year award for the second time and sealed his credentials as one of the Cape’s top winemakers. For being over 40 years old it was hanging in there and still showing some life. An impressive and enlightening tasting experience that shows South African Cabernet Sauvignon can age gracefully.
David has followed up nicely in his father’s footsteps, having in time, worked the hard yards and earned his place as well as one of the Cape’s top winemakers. If we live long enough we hope we will be able to try one of David’s Cabernets with 40 plus years on it.
