It’s been a great year for the School at Kerber’s Farm.  As many of you know we formed a partnership with Suffolk County last year to create a 20-acre educational farm on the property opposite the store.  This land was the former site of the sprawling 300+ acre Froelich Farm – a historic potato farm. When the County acquired the farm to prevent future development, it was mandated that a portion of the land continue to be farmed.  Since the beginning of this year, we have done a lot of heavy lifting with regard to infrastructure - including the clearing of decades of brush, the installation of deer fencing to protect future crops, and the difficult task of bringing water to the site.  We have also begun to plant crops (some potatoes of course), add bee hives, chickens, and sunflowers.  We purchased a great John Deere tractor and hired a very capable Farm Director who works in tandem with our School Director to create a comprehensive curriculum to advance the school’s goals.  The school’s mission is to teach students of all ages about sustainability, organic farming practices, growing our own food, and healthy eating habits.   Do you want to get involved?  Take a class ,or volunteer?  Head over to kerbersfarmschool.org for more information.  And stay tuned for our farmstand that will be open on weekends selling the bounty from the farm.  All proceeds will go to support the school’s operations as well as provide fresh vegetables, honey, and eggs our local food pantry; The Helping Hand Mission in Huntington.
