It’s the Roll!!!!

Philadelphia, the roll has always mattered just as much as what goes inside it. Amoroso’s dates back to 1904, when Italian immigrant Vincenzo Amoroso and his sons started baking bread in the Philadelphia area. The family moved its operation into West Philadelphia in 1914, and over the decades Amoroso’s rolls became deeply connected to the city’s sandwich culture.

Cheesesteaks, hoagies, roast pork, meatball sandwiches. Generations of Philly shops relied on that familiar hearth-baked roll: soft enough to bite through, but sturdy enough to hold everything together. Eventually, seeing an Amoroso’s box behind the counter became almost a sign that you were in a real Philly sandwich shop.

The bakery eventually grew into a major operation, and although production moved from Southwest Philadelphia to Bellmawr, New Jersey, in 2015, the Amoroso name remains closely tied to Philadelphia food culture.
