Sam Houston State University Rodeo Team

Sam Houston State University Rodeo Team Huntsville, the home of General Sam Houston, is located 60 miles north of Houston on Interstate-45 in the piney woods of South East Texas.

Huntsville has a population of about 30,000 and is in the center of the Southern Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (N.I.R.A.) which means the rodeo team has less travel than any other school in the N.I.R.A. Huntsville is also a very good town to rodeo out of; regardless of the type of rodeoing you want to do. We are fortunate to have both indoor and outdoor practice arenas a

nd maintain practice stock almost year-round for timed events. The SHSU Rodeo Club is one of the oldest clubs on campus (active since 1950) and has produced more national champion rodeo teams than any other college or university in the nation! If you like the sport of rodeo and want to get a good education, Sam Houston is the college to attend.

Sam Houston State University has announced the naming of its College of Osteopathic Medicine in honor of Russell and Glenda Gordy, two distinguished alumni whose visionary philanthropy helped turn the dream of a medical school into a nationally recognized institution.

Approved by the Texas State University System Board of Regents, the naming honors Russell and Glenda Gordy's decades of support for and their pivotal role in establishing the SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Their investment helped lay the foundation for a program that is preparing the next generation of physicians while expanding access to quality healthcare across Texas.

The naming of the Russell and Glenda Gordy College of Osteopathic Medicine celebrates not only the generosity that made the medical school possible, but also a legacy that will continue shaping healthcare, higher education and the lives of future physicians for generations to come.

The beautiful, state-of-the-art facility we are blessed to call home would not be possible without the vision, drive, and unwavering support from sponsors like the Sandel family with Sandel Energy. The Sonny Sikes Arena was once just a dream — a dream held by Mr. Byron Sandel’s late son, Blake. Today, that dream stands strong, serving generations to come. We invite you to listen as Mr. Sandel shares a heartfelt story of how he played a part in making his son’s dreams come to life.
