Instructor Kristin has officially completed Level 1 and Level 2 of Dr. Steve Peters’ Horse Brain Science course!

At Shield & Saddle, continuing education is a huge part of what we do. We look forward to bringing this knowledge—and the latest scientific developments surrounding the equine brain, vision, behavior, and learning—into each of our training sessions.

Understanding how the horse sees, thinks, processes information, and responds to its environment is vital to becoming a better trainer, rider, and partner to your horse.

A huge thank you to Dr. Steve Peters, Michelle Snook, and Amy Skinner for sharing their knowledge, experience, and dedication to helping people better understand the horse.

The more we understand the horse, the better we can train. 🐴🧠

Never stop growing. Never stop learning.

Day 2 for Instructor Kristin at the Horse Brain Science Course with Dr. Steve Peters and Amy Skinner! 🧠🐴

This course is packed with an incredible amount of information about the equine brain, behavior, vision, and how horses process the world around them.

What she is learning this week will directly impact our training at Shield & Saddle. Our Equine Vision & Psychology presentation will be updated with the latest information so we can continue bringing our students the best education possible.

As new things are studied, learned, and discovered—we update, adapt, and improve.

Never stop growing. Never stop learning.
That applies to our horses, our students, and especially our instructors. 🐴🧠

Building new obstacles or repairing old ones? 🛠️🐴

Training starts long before the horse ever enters the arena. We’re always building, modifying, and repairing obstacles to keep our obstacles safe and ready for the next clinic.

A little PVC, a little creativity, and probably a few trips back to the hardware store. 😂

What obstacle do you think we’re working on?

Continuing Education = Better Instructors

Continuing education is extremely important to us at Shield & Saddle. We believe that if we expect our students to keep learning and improving, we should be doing the same.

This week, both of our instructors are back in the classroom—but in two different areas of training.

🐴 Instructor Kristin will be attending a four-day Horse Brain course with Dr. Steve Peters, continuing to expand her knowledge of how horses think, learn, and respond.

🛡️ Instructor Andrew will be attending a two-day Law Enforcement course, continuing to build his knowledge and skills on the law enforcement side.

The education and experience we gain this week will come right back to our students and the courses we teach.

At Shield & Saddle, we’re always training to become better instructors so we can provide better training to you.

Equitation Matters in Mounted Patrol

One of the most important—and sometimes overlooked—parts of mounted patrol is proper equitation.

Good equitation helps protect the soundness of the horse, improves the rider’s balance and effectiveness, and helps both horse and rider perform through the long hours that mounted patrol work can demand.

Shield & Saddle brings together mounted patrol experience and certified horsemanship instruction. Our team includes a CHA-certified English & Western instructor who understands not only equitation, but the unique demands of mounted patrol.

Whether your unit needs hands-on instruction or online support, we can help evaluate riders, identify areas for improvement, and build stronger, more effective horse-and-rider teams.

Ask Shield & Saddle how we can help improve your unit’s equitation—in the arena and through online support.

Denver Clinic 🇺🇸🐴🔥

We’ll let the video say the rest.

08/07/2026

As soon as we wrapped up, we hit the road for home. We made it into New Mexico for the night, giving our new Predator generator its first real test after our old generator decided to quit on us at a rest area on the way to Colorado. So far, it’s off to a solid start!

There wasn’t much time to stop and explore, but the views along the drive reminded us why we love life on the road. Every mile is another memory.

After another long haul, we made it home just in time to get back to patrol Tuesday morning. From the arena to the badge—it’s all part of the journey.

Thanks to everyone who made this Colorado clinic another great one. Until the next stop!
